Australian Bureau of Statistics to survey construction industry

Australian builders and the construction trade services industry are being asked to participate in an important national survey in the coming months.

The survey, by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), will update material last collected in 1989 and will provide those involved in the building and construction industry with a detailed insight into their industry so as to assist them with business decisions. This will be the first detailed examination in nearly a decade of an industry that has gone through a lot of change.

Through their participation in the survey, builders and the trade services industry are being asked to contribute to better information about:
  • problems experienced during major downturns in the industry;
  • measures which assisted businesses to survive these downturns;
  • innovation, research and development activity in the industry;
  • what, if any, difficulties have been experienced in attempting to expand interstate or abroad;
  • business performance, financial and structural information about the industry; and
  • employment in the construction industry.

Businesses in the construction sector, industry and trade associations, governments and other interest groups are expected to use the figures as important planning aids in today's business environment. Individual businesses will be able to assess their performance against others in the industry.

Key industry associations, including the Housing Industry Association (HIA) and Master Builders Australia (MBA) have worked closely with ABS in developing this survey. They will use the results of the survey to influence and evaluate construction industry policies.

The collection is being run by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), with dispatch of the survey forms starting next month (August).
