Paralympian launches Australian Year Book for 2000

Australian paralympian Hamish MacDonald today launched the Year 2000 edition of Year Book Australia, which has a special focus on the Sydney Olympics.

Hamish, who excels at shot-put, discus and 100 metres, was invited by the Australian Statistician, Bill McLennan, to launch the Australia Bureau of Statistics' flagship publication at the Australian Institute of Sport on the eve of Australia Day 2000. Hamish is a Paralympic gold medallist in shot put, former world record holder and an ambassador to the UN High Commission for Refugees.

The Year Book Australia provides a comprehensive statistical overview of various aspects of the economy and social conditions in Australia, together with their administrative and legislative background.

"Publishing this valuable reference continues a long tradition. The first Official Year Book of the Commonwealth was published in 1908, although individual Australian States and colonies had been producing year books for several decades previously," Mr McLennan said.

"While each edition of the Year Book Australia contains a number of special feature articles, this 82nd edition recognises the Sydney Olympics, with articles on sporting Australians, the construction of Stadium Australia, and the Sydney climate during the Olympic games.

"All ABS publications draw extensively on information provided freely by individuals, businesses, governments and other organisations. Their continued co-operation is very much appreciated.

"The release of this flagship publication of the ABS is an opportune time to extend thanks and appreciation to those who through the year have helped the ABS collect and publish an extraordinarily large range of data and information."
