Northern Territory Regional Area has Youngest Population The youngest population in Australia was in the Northern Territory (excluding Darwin), according to a report released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The median age in this area, the Balance of the Northern Territory (Statistical Division, or SD), was 28 years, and 29% of the population was aged 14 years or under. In comparison, the median age for the Northern Territory was 30 years, compared with 36 years for Australia as a whole. The report used results from the 2001 Census of Population and Housing to describe the major differences in the socio-demographic characteristics of people living in different parts of Australia.
