This publication contains estimates of the quantity of grain stored in grain storage facilities operated by bulk grain handling companies and major grain traders in Australia as at 31 December 2004.
KEY POINTS
Following the harvesting of the majority of Australia's 2004-05 winter crop, the total quantity of grain held in storage facilities operated by bulk grain handling companies and major grain traders at 31 December 2004 was 25,555,900 tonnes. Over the three month period to 31 December 2004, wheat stocks increased by three and a half fold, rising from 5,159,000 tonnes to 18,447,900 tonnes. Barley stocks increased two and a half fold, up from 1,878,000 tonnes at 30 September to 4,819,600 tonnes by end of December. The quantity of oats held in storage facilities operated by bulk handling companies and major grain traders increased to 153,000 tonnes in the three months to 31 December from 97,000 tonnes recorded at the end of September 2004.
Total grain stocks held by bulk handling companies and major grain traders at 31 December 2004 were down 18% or 5,704,200 tonnes on the quantity stored at the same time last year, following the 2003 winter harvest.
