ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION

This publication contains revised estimates of the quantity of grain stored in grain storage facilities operated by bulk grain handling companies and major grain traders in Australia as at 30 June 2003. It also includes estimates of the quantity of grain stored by these businesses at 31 December 2002, 31 January 2003, 28 February 2003 and 31 March 2003.


KEY POINTS

The total quantity of grain held in storage facilities operated by bulk grain handling companies and major grain traders reduced by 33.7% from 12,987,900 tonnes recorded at 31 March 2003 to 8,607,300 tonnes at 30 June 2003. In the same period, wheat reduced from 9,237,700 tonnes to 5,968,000 tonnes, a fall of 35.4%, and barley fell by 31.7% to 1,711,400 tonnes from the March figure of 2,506,500 tonnes. The quantity of oats held in storage facilities operated by bulk handling companies and major grain traders fell by 22.5% in the three months to June from 82,800 tonnes recorded at 31 March 2003 to 64,200 tonnes at 30 June 2003.

In the 6 months since the survey commenced, total grain stocks have reduced by 50.2% from 17,296,600 tonnes at 31 December 2002.
