DECEMBER KEY POINTS


FINAL DEMAND (EXCL. EXPORTS)
  • rose 0.5% in the December quarter 2016.
  • mainly due to rises in the prices received for Building construction (+0.7%), Petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (+12.5%) and Accommodation (+5.3%).
  • partly offset by falls in the prices received for Electronic equipment manufacturing (-1.5%), Professional and scientific equipment manufacturing (-2.1%) and Other machinery and equipment manufacturing (-1.8%).
  • rose 0.7% through the year to the December quarter 2016.


INTERMEDIATE DEMAND
  • rose 0.6% in the December quarter 2016.
  • mainly due to rises in the prices received for Petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (+10.2%), Coal mining (+53.3%) and Oil and gas extraction (+7.1%).
  • partly offset by falls in the prices received for Basic polymer manufacturing (-6.1%), Professional and scientific equipment manufacturing (-3.5%) and Rental and hiring services (except Real estate) (-0.7%).
  • rose 1.0% through the year to the December quarter 2016.


PRELIMINARY DEMAND
  • rose 0.6% in the December quarter 2016.
  • mainly due to rises in the prices received for Petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (+11.0%), Coal mining (+53.4%) and Oil and gas extraction (+6.7%).
  • partly offset by falls in the prices received for Pharmaceutical and medicinal product manufacturing (-13.6%), Professional and scientific equipment manufacturing (-5.9%) and Basic polymer manufacturing (-6.0%).
  • rose 0.9% through the year to the December quarter 2016.

REVISIONS IN THIS ISSUE

There are revisions to the March, June and September 2016 quarters in Table 21. Output of the Transport, postal and warehousing industries - 471 Rail freight transport index as a result of updated information from survey respondents. The affected series are annotated in the Time Series Spreadsheets and Data Cubes.


OTHER CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

This issue contains a feature article titled ABS Liaison - Residential Construction. The article presents qualitative information on the Construction industry which support recent trends seen in the data and provide insights into current and future conditions.


CHANGES IN FUTURE ISSUES

From the March quarter 2017, two additional series will be included in the Time Series Spreadsheets. These indexes will be incorporated into the stage of production indexes from March quarter 2017.
