ABS EDUCATION SERVICES
ABS Education Services is the unit within the Australian Bureau of Statistics dedicated to promoting statistics in schools and assisting teachers and students to increase their statistical literacy. Statistics is a life skill and ABS Education Services aims to give the school community the resources, knowledge and confidence to develop this skill and become more confident using, understanding and applying statistics in the classroom.
This newsletter highlights the latest curriculum related teaching resources, student activities and statistical tools that have been developed by ABS Education Services.
New Look for Education Services Webpages
ABS Education Services will soon be launching an improved set of webpages designed for use by both teachers and students. This new format aims to assist educators in bringing data and statistics to life in the classroom. The pages will offer a range of learning sources, including: classroom activities, games and puzzles, professional development materials, and specially selected ABS publications. These new webpages will be divided into resources for teachers and a separate area specifically for students.
Census 2006 Data First Release
Wednesday 27 June 2007 sees the launch by the Treasurer of first release data from the 2006 Census of Population and Housing.
Access via the ABS website to detailed Census data has been significantly enhanced and expanded recently, ensuring that an even wider range of detailed data is available in a variety of formats for all areas across Australia. In addition the MapStats facility enables data variables to be mapped for a selected location which is very useful particularly for students and teachers of Geography, SOSE, and HSIE.
Education Services will be producing a new series of engaging classroom activities based around 2006 Census data and products. Education News will keep you informed of release dates.
Use CensusAtSchool Data in 2007
CensusAtSchool data is available online through the Random Sampler for use in the classroom throughout 2007. Check out this FREE and invaluable resource.
ABS Education Services has recently produced a professional development DVD which provides an insight into the CensusAtSchool project and contains all the information you'll need to get started with CensusAtSchool. General Social Survey : Summary Results, Australia 2006 (cat. no. 4159.0)
Brings together a wide range of people based information about many different topics of social concern including health, housing, education, work, income, transport. Gives an overview through summary tables, for different population groups and selected themes.
Recorded Crime - Victims, Australia 2006 (cat. no. 4510.0)
This publication compiles national crime statistics on a victim basis and measures the number of victims for each offence category. Includes a breakdown of selected offences by victim characteristics, location of offence and whether weapons were involved.
Internet Activity, Australia March 2007 (cat. no. 8153.0)
Contains details supplied by Internet service providers (ISPs) of Internet activity in Australia. Includes information on type of connection, type of user (business/household), volume of data downloaded, speed of the internet connection and location of the subscriber (state/territory).
