NOTES
ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION
This publication presents estimates of net undercount for the 2006 Census, as well as information on how the estimates were calculated. This issue presents additional data and information to that included in the earlier publication Census of Population and Housing - Undercount (cat. no. 2940.0) released on 5 June 2007. The additional data includes undercount estimates for Indigenous status and country of birth.
NOTES ABOUT THE ESTIMATES
Information in this publication has been obtained from the 2006 Census Post Enumeration Survey (PES). The PES was conducted in September 2006, soon after the Census. People from approximately 33,000 households across Australia were asked about everyone present or usually resident in the household. In addition to obtaining basic demographic information, questions were asked about each person's usual residence, their location on Census night, and any other addresses where they might have been counted in the Census.
The results of the PES are used to determine how many people were missed in the Census and how many were counted more than once.
The estimated net undercount from the PES is used to augment the Census counts for the purpose of deriving population estimates for Australia and the states and territories.
ROUNDING
As estimates have been rounded, discrepancies may occur between sums of the component items and totals.
