SEPTEMBER KEY POINTS


TREND ESTIMATES

  • The trend estimate for the total number of dwelling units commenced fell marginally (-0.1%) in the September quarter 2005.
  • New private sector house commencements rose 1.3% in the latest quarter.
  • The trend for new private other residential building commencements fell 2.1% in September 2005 and is now showing falls for the past six quarters.


SEASONALLY ADJUSTED ESTIMATES
  • In seasonally adjusted terms, the total number of dwelling units commenced fell 5.0%, to 38,035, in the September quarter 2005.
  • New private sector house commencements fell 2.2%, to 25,780.
  • New private other residential building fell 11.6%, to 10,849, in the June quarter 2005. This is the lowest level since the December quarter 2001.

ABOUT THIS ISSUE

This publication provides an early indication of trends in the number of dwelling units commenced. The data are estimates based on a response rate of approximately 90% of a sample of building jobs collected in the Building Activity Survey. More comprehensive and updated results will be released in Building Activity, Australia (cat. no. 8752.0) on 20 January 2006.



SIGNIFICANT REVISIONS THIS ISSUE

Compared to the estimates published in Building Activity, Australia, June quarter 2005 (cat. no. 8752.0), released on 14 October 2005:

  • the number of private sector new houses commenced in Australia during the June quarter 2005 has been revised upwards by 294 (+1.1%).
  • the number of new private sector other residential dwelling units commenced in Australia during the June quarter 2005 has been revised upwards by 222 (+1.9%).

  • The total number of dwelling units commenced rose 1.3% in the September quarter 2005, to 40,148.
  • New private sector house commencements rose 4.5%, to 27,351. Commencements rose significantly in Queensland (+17.1%), Western Australia (+21.6%) and the Northern Territory (+45.7%), but fell in all other states and territories.
  • New private sector other residential building fell 8.7%, to 11,017. Only Victoria and the Northern Territory recorded rises.
  • The total number of public sector dwellings commenced rose 20.2%, to 1,097.
