This publication contains estimates of the quantity of grain stored in grain storage facilities operated by bulk grain handling companies and major grain traders in Australia as at 31 March 2003. It also includes estimates of the quantity of grain stored by these businesses at 31 December 2002, 31 January 2003 and 28 February 2003.


KEY POINTS

The total quantity of grain held in storage facilities operated by bulk grain handling companies and major grain traders reduced by 12.4% from 14,823,900 tonnes recorded at 28 February 2003 to 12,987,900 tonnes at 31 March 2003. In the same period, wheat reduced from 10,479,600 tonnes to 9,237,700 tonnes, a fall of 11.9% and barley fell by 12.2% to 2,506,500 tonnes from the February figure of 2,853,900 tonnes. The quantity of oats held in storage facilities operated by bulk handling companies and major grain traders fell by 42.0% in the month of March from 142,800 tonnes recorded at 28 February 2003 to 82,800 tonnes at 31 March 2003.
