JULY KEY POINTS

ORIGINAL ESTIMATES
  • In original terms, the July 2012 merchandise imports were $20,527m, an increase of $622m (3%) on the June 2012 merchandise imports of $19,905m.


PRELIMINARY BALANCE OF PAYMENTS GOODS IMPORTS
  • Preliminary analysis shows that goods debits (imports) on a balance of payments basis in original terms rose $633m (3%) between June and July 2012. In seasonally adjusted terms, goods debits fell $372m (2%) from $21,726m in June 2012 to $21,354m in July 2012. Capital goods fell $495m (8%). Intermediate and other merchandise goods rose $108m (1%), consumption goods rose $13m and non-monetary gold rose $2m.
  • The June quarter 2012 issue of Balance of Payments and International Investment Position, Australia (cat. no. 5302.0) and the July 2012 issue of International Trade in Goods and Services, Australia (cat. no. 5368.0) will include goods and services debits estimates that have been revised since the June 2012 issue of International Trade in Goods and Services, Australia (cat. no. 5368.0) which was released on 2 August 2012. These revisions reflect information obtained after the release of this issue.
  • Preliminary analysis shows that, in seasonally adjusted terms, the goods debits volumes was revised from 1.2% to 1.7% and the implicit price deflator was revised from 2.0% to 1.9% during the June quarter 2012. In original terms, the Chain Laspeyres price index remained unchanged and the implicit price deflator was revised from 1.4% to 1.3%.


RELATED RELEASES
  • As part of an ongoing improvement program, the method for seasonally adjusting the quarterly current price value of coal, coke and briquettes goods credits will be refined in the June quarter 2012 issue of Balance of Payments and International Investment Position, Australia (cat. no. 5302.0). From September quarter 2005, this series will be seasonally adjusted using the seasonal factors from the corresponding chain volume measure series.


REVISIONS
  • Revisions have been made to the previous six months to incorporate the latest administrative data relating to international merchandise trade.
