FEBRUARY KEY POINTS


SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS
  • Trend estimates: Short-term visitor arrivals to Australia during February 2009 (465,000 movements), rose 0.9% compared with January 2009 (461,100 movements). This followed monthly increases of 0.6% in December 2008 and 0.7% in January 2009.
  • Currently, trend estimates for arrivals are 0.7% lower than in February 2008.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: During February 2009, arrivals (477,200 movements) increased by 5.9% compared with January 2009 (450,500 movements). This followed a monthly increase of 3.3% for December 2008 and a monthly decrease of 3.2% for January 2009.
  • Original estimates: There were 504,000 arrivals to Australia in February 2009.


SHORT-TERM RESIDENT DEPARTURES
  • Trend estimates: Short-term resident departures from Australia during February 2009 (475,100 movements), recorded a decrease of 0.5% compared with January 2009 (477,500 movements). This followed monthly decreases in the previous two months; December 2008 and January 2009 (each 0.5%).
  • Currently, trend estimates for departures are 0.7% lower than in February 2008.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: During February 2009, departures (477,100 movements) increased by 3.2% compared with January 2009 (462,200 movements). This followed a monthly increase of 3.5% for December 2008 and a monthly decrease of 5.7% for January 2009.
  • Original estimates: There were 363,100 departures from Australia during February 2009.
