OVERVIEW COMPONENTS OF POPULATION CHANGE, Queensland POPULATION, Queensland
BIRTHS AND CONFINEMENTS In 2002, there were 46,934 confinements resulting in 47,771 live births registered to mothers usually resident in Queensland. There were 24,454 male births and 23,317 female births, giving a sex ratio of 104.9 males per 100 females. Queensland's crude birth rate of 12.9 births per 1,000 population was slightly higher than the rate for Australia as a whole (12.8). The total fertility rate (the average number of babies a female would bear during her lifetime if she experienced current age-specific fertility rates) was 1.77 babies per woman in 2002. TOTAL FERTILITY RATES (a) Number of babies per woman The median age of Queensland mothers for all confinements was 29.5 years compared with 30.2 years for all Australia. Exnuptial confinements represented 37% of all confinements registered in Queensland in 2002, a substantially greater proportion than the 28% of all confinements registered as exnuptial in 1992. In 2002, there were 817 sets of twins and higher order births registered, which means one in every 57 confinements resulted in a multiple birth in Queensland. This is an increase in multiple births from 1992 where one in every 75 confinements resulted in a multiple birth. BIRTHS AND CONFINEMENTS(a), Queensland
DEATHS In 2002, there were 23,968 registered deaths of persons usually resident in Queensland, comprising 12,576 males and 11,392 females. This was an increase of 5% on the number registered in 2001 and an increase of 17% from 1992, when there were 20,496 deaths. The standardised death rates have fallen from 8.3 deaths per 1,000 population in 1992 to 6.8 deaths per 1,000 population in 2002. Queensland's leading causes of death in 2002 continued to be Malignant neoplasms (cancer) and Ischaemic heart diseases, together accounting for nearly 50% of all deaths. Cerebrovascular diseases (stroke) were also a major cause totalling 2,290 deaths (9.6%), and suicide accounted for 537 deaths (2.2%). SELECTED CAUSES OF DEATH, Queensland 2002 In 2002 the median age at death continued to rise, and in Queensland was 75.6 years for males and 81.9 years for females, which is slightly lower than the Australian median ages at death of 76.2 years and 82.2 years respectively. There were 277 infant deaths registered in 2002, a 1.8% decrease on the 282 infant deaths registered in 2001. The infant mortality rate for 2002 was 5.8 per 1,000 live births, which is substantially lower than the 1992 rate of 7.9 per 1,000 live births. Life expectancy at birth continues to increase, a male child born in 2002 in Queensland has a life expectancy of 77.2 years and a female child 82.4 years. DEATHS(a), Queensland
MIGRATION In 2002, 45% of Queensland's population growth was from interstate migration. This net gain of 38,700 was the result of 119,600 arrivals and 80,900 departures. This was an increase of 66% over the preceding year (23,300 persons), but falls short of the 1992 gain of 40,400 persons. Net overseas migration during 2002 contributed 27% of Queensland's population growth. The net population gain from migration, combining both overseas and interstate migration, was 62,000 persons in 2002. MIGRATION, Queensland
MARRIAGES There were 21,264 marriages registered in Queensland in 2002. This represents an increase of 4.7% on both the number of marriages in 1992 and 2001, but a 6.9% decrease in the number of marriages registered in 2000. In 2002, the crude marriage rate for Queensland was 5.7 marriages per 1,000 population. This was the highest crude marriage rate recorded in all states and territories, and was higher than the national average rate of 5.4. The crude marriage rate has decreased 15% between 1992 and 2002. CRUDE MARRIAGE RATES (a) Per 1,000 population The median age at marriage in Queensland was 31.1 years for males and 29.0 years for females. The difference of two years between the median age of partners has remained stable over the past decade. The increasing preference for civil marriage ceremonies over religious marriage ceremonies continued in 2002. Civil celebrants performed 60% of all marriages in Queensland, while ministers of religion performed the remaining 40%. This compares with civil celebrants performing 57% of marriages in 2001 and 43% in 1992. MARRIAGES, Queensland
DIVORCES In 2001, the most recent data currently available, 12,085 divorces were granted in Queensland. This represents a 20% increase over the number of divorces granted in 2000, and a 35% increase since 1992. The crude divorce rate in Queensland in 2001 was 3.3 divorces per 1,000 population. This rate was the highest of all states and territories and above the national rate of 2.9 divorces per 1,000 population. Apart from a decline in the crude divorce rate in 2000, this figure has remained relatively stable over the past 10 years. In Queensland, the median interval between marriage and divorce was 11.8 years in 2001. This figure continues the gradual increase over the past decade in the median interval between marriage and divorce, with an interval of 11.0 years recorded in 1992. Over half (55%) of divorces registered in Queensland in 2001 involved at least one child under the age of 18 years. Children aged 5-9 years were the most common age group, accounting for 37% of children involved in divorce. This proportion has been relatively stable over the past 10 years. DIVORCES, Queensland
