REVISION OF DATA
Data for December Quarter 2000 and March Quarter 2001 in Table 2 are revised since previous issue and are now final. These revisions were necessitated by the detection of an intermediate computer process failure in preparing final intercensal population estimates. The process failure occurred in replacing preliminary projections of overseas migration for the March and June Quarters 2001 with actual data from passenger cards supplied by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs.
ABOUT THESE STATISTICS
This publication provides population estimates for the states and territories at 30 September 2002. Further details of these statistics are available in Australian Demographic Statistics, September Quarter, 2002 (cat. no. 3101.0).
These estimates take into account the results of the 2001 Census of Population and Housing and final estimates of Census net undercount, demographic adjustments, birth and death registrations and estimates of net overseas and net interstate migration.
For further information about the revisions incorporated in this release please see Demography Working Paper 2002/2 - Estimated Resident Population and Effects of Census Systems Created Records and Demography Working Paper 2003/1 - Estimated Resident Population and Measurement of Category Jumping.
ESTIMATED RESIDENT POPULATION
The preliminary estimated resident population of Australia at September 2002 was 19,727,500 persons. The population increased by 252,000 persons since September 2001 and 64,700 persons since June 2002.
POPULATION GROWTH RATES
During the year ended September 2002 the Australian population grew by 1.3%. Excluding Other Territories, all states and territories, with the exception of the Northern Territory, had positive growth rates, the highest being for Queensland (2.3%) and the lowest for Tasmania (0.4%). The Northern Territory recorded a negative growth rate of 0.1% (or a loss of 260 persons) in the 12 months ended September 2002.
