PRELIMINARY KEY POINTS
Following record production in the 2013-14 season due to favourable growing conditions, the production of wheat fell to 23.1 million tonnes in 2014-15 from 25.3 million tonnes in 2013-14.
Total sorghum production has increased to 2.2 million tonnes from 1.3 million tonnes in 2013-14, driven by high international demand and favourable seasonal conditions. Queensland was the largest producer of sorghum with 1.6 million tonnes
Sheep and lamb numbers continued to decline due to dry seasonal conditions across eastern Australia and increased slaughtering rates. Total sheep and lamb numbers dropped by 4 per cent from 2013-14 down to 70 million head. NSW had the greatest number of sheep and lambs on holding, with 26 million head followed by Victoria with 14 million head.
Dairy cattle numbers have dropped 1 per cent to 2.8 million head. Falls reported across most states have been offset by increased herd sizes in Victoria and Tasmania (to 1.8 million and 246 thousand head respectively) due to seasonal conditions with favourable rainfall in key dairy regions.
