CHANGE IN COLLECTION SCOPE
The scope for the 2015-16 Agricultural Census was all agricultural businesses with an Estimated Value of Agricultural Operations (EVAO) of $40,000 or greater. This is a change from previous ABS rural environment and agricultural collections, where a scope of EVAO of $5,000 or greater was used. This change was foreshadowed in February 2016 in Agricultural Census: Nature and Content, 2015-16 (cat. no 7100.1).
The 2014-15 estimates presented in this publication have been revised to use the new scope of $40,000 or greater.

PRELIMINARY KEY POINTS
Improving growing conditions and water access have resulted in an increase in cotton production from 2014-15. Nationally, cotton production increased 48% to 616.6 million kilograms, driven by a 63% increase in New South Wales production, up from 253.8 to 413.4 million kilograms
National barley production increased 2% to 8.6 million tonnes driven by increases in areas sown and favourable growing conditions in New South Wales (up 33% to 2.4 million tonnes) and Queensland (up 61% to 387,000 tonnes). These large increases were partly offset by falls in Western Australia (down 2% to 3.1 million tonnes), South Australia (down 14% to 1.6 million tonnes) and Victoria (down 20% to 1.1 million tonnes).
Production of oats increased 13% to 1.3 million tonnes, with many regions increasing areas sown following increased domestic demand and prices. Favourable growing conditions resulted in increased production in most states, including New South Wales (up 18% to 381,000 tonnes), Victoria (up 20% to 193,000 tonnes) and South Australia (up 25% to 110,000 tonnes). Western Australia had a large increase in the areas sown (up 26%) however poorer yields resulted in a production increase of 6% to 581,600 tonnes.
