SUMMARY COMMENTARY
INTRODUCTION
There were 1,830,673 tonnes of grapes crushed in 2007-08, an increase of 433,323 tonnes (31.0%) on the previous year. Beverage wine production also showed an increase, rising 26.7% to 1,240.0 million litres.
WINEMAKING LOCATIONS AND GRAPES CRUSHED
For the 2008 vintage there were 382 wineries around Australia which crushed 50 tonnes or more of grapes owned by 340 winemaking businesses. There were 1,830,673 tonnes of grapes crushed in 2007-08, an increase of 433,323 tonnes (31.0%) from last year.
South Australia had 31.4% of all the grape crushing facilities in Australia. These wineries in South Australia accounted for 45.3% of the national wine grape crush. New South Wales/Australian Capital Territory (NSW/ACT) had 23.0% of the total number of wineries with 34.4% of the total wine crush, followed by Victoria (22.5% of all wineries and 16.3% of all grapes crushed) and Western Australia (18.3% of wineries and 3.4% of the grape crush).
The 340 winemaking businesses, in terms of crush capacity, are diverse in size. There were 173 businesses that each crushed from 50 to 400 tonnes of grapes, producing a combined crush of 33,048 tonnes. Of these smaller businesses, the 36 smallest winemakers accounted for only 0.1% of all grapes crushed and averaged 73 tonnes each. The 167 winemaking businesses that each crushed more than 400 tonnes of grapes crushed a total of 1,797,625 tonnes (98.2% of the national total) of grapes. There were 14 winemakers that crushed more than 20,000 tonnes each, accounting for a total of 1,290,478 tonnes of grapes or 70.5% of the total crush.

BEVERAGE WINE PRODUCTION
There were an estimated 1,240,038 million litres of beverage wine produced by winemakers that crushed more than 50 tonnes of grapes. Approximately 20 million litres were indirectly estimated for winemakers crushing between 50 and 400 tonnes. This beverage wine production figure was 261.6 million litres (26.7%) more than the total for 2006-07.
Red/rosé table wine made up 672.5 million litres (54.2%) of the estimated beverage wine produced in 2007-08. This was an increase of 200.2 million litres (42.4%) on the red/rosé table wine produced in the previous year. White table wine accounted for 552.5 million litres, a rise of 77.8 million litres (16.4%) on 2006-07.
