New Census web interface for 2006! A new, simplified web interface has been developed by the ABS for the 2006 Census. Launched on 4 August 2006 this interface guides the user through a series of steps giving them access to products relevant to their needs. A taste of what’s to come... You can now access 2001 Census statistics in their new format from the Census link on any ABS web page. This is a valuable opportunity to familiarise yourself with the new, simplified interface before the 2006 data is available. 2001 Census data is available for free from the ABS web site, via the following online options: More new products will be available online in the future: Bookmark www.abs.gov.au and follow the Census link to check out new Census developments as they happen. This new range of Internet products has been developed to better cater for the varying levels of expertise and experience amongst census data users. Should you have any feedback regarding the new range of products, please email us at census.software@abs.gov.au Michael Beahan Director Census Products & Services Using CDATA 2001 - Full GIS with MapInfo Professional V8.5 MapInfo Australia has released MapInfo Professional® Version 8.5, the first version of the company’s location intelligence application with Web Services connectivity. MapInfo Professional Version 8.5 represents a dramatic leap in desktop location intelligence technology as it allows users to connect their desktop product with their enterprise platform. Built-in capabilities allow MI Pro users to connect to MapInfo Envinsa™ or MapMarker® products to perform geocoding and driving region capabilities. Alternatively if organisations don’t have these products in-house, they can access MapInfo’s hosted Envinsa Online Services to geocode and perform driving regions on a subscription basis (see example below). In addition to connectivity to Envinsa and MapMarker, MapBasic® support for HTTP, XML and FTP is also available. This support enables users to connect to services including RSS feeds such as weather reports and XML interfaces to enterprise applications such as SAP or Business Objects. The ABS has undertaken software compliance testing of CDATA 2001 with MapInfo Professional Version 8.5 on the following operating systems; CDATA 2001 Full GIS works well with the new version, and there were no major operating conflicts identified through product testing. Disclaimer: Only major software functions are tested each time a new version of MapInfo Professional is released. The functions tested included Reports, Thematic Maps, Dataviews, and Graphs etc. As all software functions cannot be tested, CDATA support will be limited to offering CDATA 2001 - Full GIS users 'work around' solutions to any problems that are directly related to the use of CDATA 2001 - Full GIS with future versions of MapInfo Professional. To upgrade your copy of MapInfo Professional please contact your local MapInfo representative or MapInfo partner for further assistance. CDATA 2001 Full GIS Clients who upgrade to MapInfo Professional Version 8.5 will also need to contact the Census Technical Helpline on 1800 676 646, to obtain a new CDATA 2001 installer, as the current CDATA 2001 installer searches for an installed copy of MapInfo Version 7.0 New South Wales in Focus If you have ever needed to find out anything about the state of New South Wales, an extensive array of statistical information is now available in New South Wales In Focus 2006 (cat. no. 1338.1) released on 28 June 2006. NSW in Focus is a contemporary record of activity within the State, providing a wide range of statistics from both ABS and non ABS sources. It contains ten chapters in all, each representing areas of social or economic importance: population, family and community, health, education and training, crime and justice, housing, household economic resources, economic activity, transport and environment. Within each chapter, a summary table presents a time series of key indicators, followed by more detailed statistics relating to issues identified within each domain. NSW in Focus is an easy to use reference for government agencies, universities, other education facilities, research organisations and the general community.
