Agricultural Census 2000-01
INTRODUCTION
This publication presents final commodity and livestock estimates from the 2000-01 Agricultural Census at the standard ABS geographies of Statistical Local Area (SLA) and Statistical Division (SD). In addition to making sub-state data from the 2000-01 Agricultural Census available to the general community, the purpose of this release is to demonstrate the style of ABS publication users can expect from the 2005-06 Agricultural Census.

DATA AVAILABILITY
The ABS Agricultural Census collects area and production data for a wide range of agricultural commodities. In addition data on inputs to the production process such as water, fertiliser and land management are collected. All collected data in 2000-01 are published at SD level and selected commodity and livestock data are available at SLA level.
Not all commodities are collected in each state; rather, commodities appropriate to agriculture in each state are collected. For example, data for tropical and sub-tropical fruit are collected in the northern states, such as Queensland, while data for temperate fruit are collected in the southern states such as Tasmania. STATISTICAL LOCAL AREA DATA FOR 2000-01
In a number of cases, the total 2000-01 Area of Holding (AOH) for Statistical Local Areas (SLAs) exceeds the total area of the SLA. This anomaly occurred because there were a number of responding units whose location address details were not recorded precisely enough to accurately code their geographic location. There were also some large farms which operate across SLA boundaries and have been coded to the SLA of predominant operations.
While the area of holding was affected in a number of SLAs, investigations found the impact on 2000-01 commodity estimates at SLA level would be far less, in most cases less than 5%.
With this in mind, the ABS recommends users treat 2000-01 SLA data with caution. Users of the data are encouraged to contact the ABS if they have any queries or concerns.
