INTRODUCTION

This publication presents results in respect of the 2000-01 financial year, from an Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) survey of businesses involved in the accommodation industry. It is the sixth ABS collection of this industry.

BUSINESS SIZE

At the end of June 2001, there were 5,884 employing businesses in the accommodation industry, operating from 6,525 separate accommodation establishments. Small business employing less than 20 persons made up 85% of all business in the industry, while large businesses (those with employment of 100 or more persons) only accounted for 3% of total businesses.


SOURCES OF INCOME

In 2000-01, the total income received by businesses in the accommodation industry was $8,286m. Of the total income, $5,001m (60%) was received from takings for accommodation, $1,393m (17%) was received from takings for meals and $613m (7%) from the sale of liquor and other beverages. The majority (58%) of businesses in the industry received income from the provision of meals, but only 38% of businesses received income from the sale of liquor and other beverages.

    EXPENSES

    Total expenses of businesses in the accommodation industry in 2000-01 were $7,680m. Labour costs ($2,739m) were the largest expense item, accounting for 36% of total expenses. Other major expenses were purchases ($1,017m), rent, leasing and hiring expenses ($682m), interest expenses ($513m) and depreciation and amortisation ($410m).


    EMPLOYMENT

    At the end of June 2001, the total employment in the accommodation industry was 106,051 persons, a 12% increase since June 1998.
