This information can be accessed at the Statistical Local Area for the 1996-97 and 2000-01 Agriculutural Census data and at the higher Statistical Division level for the Agricultural Commodity Survey data of 1997-98, 1998-99 and 1999-2000. This product uses the software of the Geographical Statistics Platform (GSP) (which is shared by the Integrated Regional Data Base) to provide a user friendly retrieval system as well as easy-to-use mapping and charting facilities. Integrated Regional Data base (IRDB), Australia, 2003 The Integrated Regional Data Base gives you comprehensive regional information, plus powerful retrieval and mapping software. IRDB allows you to analyse regional economic and social data from the ABS and other sources. For further information on IRDB please see Integrated Regional database. THE LATEST FROM ENVIRONMENT - WATER SURVEY The ABS is in the process of developing a new survey entitled Water Survey - Agriculture (WSA). The WSA is the first of what will become annual environment surveys of the Agriculture sector. The survey will go into the field in October 2003 with data available around October 2004. The objective of the WSA is to provide good quality estimates of water use and associated water management issues of the agricultural sector. The ABS is the only provider of national data on water supply and use. The results of the survey will increase the accuracy, timeliness and comparability of water use by the agricultural sector nationally and at state and sub-state level. There is strong and growing demand for nationally comparable water use and water management data. The WSA data will be able to be linked to agricultural production data from the 2002-03 Agricultural Survey. The Agriculture sector accounts for approximately 70% of total water use in Australia, consequently a sound understanding of how much, for what purpose and where water is used in Agriculture is essential. OUTPOSTING PROJECTS Workplace Standards Tasmania (WST) was successful in securing the services of an ABS outposted officer in the 2002-03 round of outpostings to State Government. The Review of the Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Scheme Data Collection outposting, based on a successful project submission to the Tasmanian Statistical Advisory Committee (TSAC), commenced in September 2002 and was completed in April 2003 with a total of 3 month's resource allocated to the project. ABS project officers conducted a review of internal and external users concerning workers compensation statistics data needs and broad level strategic directions concerning the collection. A final report documenting findings and recommendations was approved by the project steering committee and has been submitted to the WorkCover Tasmania Board. LABOUR MARKET NEWS: The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) collects a range of statistics on the labour market. Labour statistics are important social and economic indicators. They provide insight into the economy, people and the effects of labour market policy. In the past, the Labour Force Survey (LFS) product set was based on a suite of paper publications. However, recent advances in electronic dissemination have led to the development of new strategies for disseminating statistics. Electronic products have many advantages, allowing for the easy manipulation of data. With the increasing use of the Internet, distribution is no longer restricted to bookshops. Users can now purchase directly from the ABS web site. Some of the changes include: The introduction of the quarterly publication Australian Labour Market Statistics (cat. no. 6105.0). This publication brings together a range of data to give an informative picture of the labour marker as a whole. New Excel spreadsheets and an expanded range of SuperTABLE data cubes. These products are released under catalogue number 6291.0.55.001. INDIGENOUS STATISTICS - IMPROVING INDIGENOUS DATA QUALITY IN AGENCY DATA COLLECTION The primary focus of the Indigenous Administrative Data (IAD) project moved from health and community services data collections towards addressing local crime and justice issues, specifically within the Department of Police and Public Safety from August 2002. Liz Milewicz has been investigating issues surrounding the coverage, standards and quality of indigenous data within Police collections and systems. This project is of high priority to both the ABS nationally and the state as it progresses the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) objectives to improve indigenous identification in administrative data. It also specifically addresses the Australasian Police Ministers' Council (APMC) draft action plan to advance reconciliation which involves strengthening partnerships between police and local indigenous communities and developing appropriate performance monitoring strategies and benchmarks. At an Agency level the project also assists Tasmanian Police to contribute information and policy advice to the Government and supports the Tasmania Together initiative. Results from the survey are available in: CULTURE AND RECREATION STATISTICS ON THE WEB The ABS National Centre for Culture and Recreation Statistics (NCCRS) has launched a Theme Page on the ABS Web site. The Culture and Recreation Theme Page is a valuable resource, providing information on culture and recreation statistical resources and contacts. Readers can select a topic of interest, such as music and the performing arts, or sport and leisure industries, and view details of ABS and some non-ABS articles and publications which contain statistics about that topic. The Theme Page also provides links to the Australian Culture and Leisure Classifications, the Directory of Culture and Leisure Statistics, the NCCRS newsletters and other web sites related to culture and recreation. Directory of Culture and Leisure Statistics The Directory of Culture and Leisure Statistics was released on the ABS web site on 13 August 2002. The key aims of the directory are to provide a quick and easy reference to ABS sources of culture and leisure data, and provide information about the extent of data available from each data collection. The details provided about each collection's data items will assist users of culture and leisure data to determine whether a collection might meet their needs, and to prepare possible cross-tabulation specifications ready for discussion with ABS information consultants. Contact details are provided for each collection. Entries also provide information on the scope, frequency and history of a collection and the major publications that present data from the collection. The ABS developed this directory with financial assistance from the Cultural Ministers Council Statistics Working Group (CMCSWG) and the Recreation and Sport Industry Statistics Group (RSISG) of the Sport and Recreation Ministers' Council. The Directory of Culture and Leisure Statistics (cat. no. 1143.0.55.001) is a web-based product which is freely available and can be viewed by clicking on ABS directories. REMOTE ACCESS DATA LABORATORY An important component of the ABS output strategy to maximise the amount of data available has been to support secondary analysis through access to microdata in the form of confidentialised unit record files (CURFs). However, the needs of researchers and policy makers have to be balanced with the ABS obligation to protect the identities of households and individuals. The ABS will continue to provide CURFs on CD-ROM. However, a new system, the Remote Access Data Laboratory (RADL), will facilitate access to confidentialised microdata beyond that which can be provided on CD-ROM. The RADL provides access to this data from the client's desktop via secure web-based communication links, or in some cases through an on-site data laboratory arrangement. Clients can submit tailored queries to produce aggregated output according to their research needs. Restrictions on the nature of queries that can be run will ensure that resultant output does not constitute a threat to confidentiality. It is this level of control and user-transparency that will allow the ABS to safely provide CURF files on this system which have a greater level of detail than has previously been possible. Future features of RADL may support the analysis of augmented files and the ability to incorporate user-supplied statistical models. Community Profile Series from the 2001 Census Community Profiles are a set of standard tables which contain key social, demographic and economic characteristics of people, families and dwellings. The Profiles, which form the core of many Census products, are available for Australian Standard Geographic Classification (ASGC) areas and other standard Census geographic areas. They are an economical way of obtaining a statistical picture of a community and making compasrisons between different areas or different population groups - an excellent tool for research and planning. The Series comprise: Basic Community Profile, Indigenous Profile, Time Series Profile, Usual Residents Profile, Expanded Community Profile and the Working Population Profile.
In September 2002, Tasmania became the first regional office in the ABS to publish its year book on the web. Statistics-Tasmania holds over 1,000 pages of text and tables, freely accessible to anyone with access to the Internet. Included in each chapter is a collection of feature articles from past Tasmanian year books. More recently, in August 2003, the ABS released Regional Statistics-Tasmania, providing a taste of some of the ABS and non-ABS data available for Tasmanian regions. Those who have previously used Statistics-Tasmania will find navigating the Regional Statistics-Tasmania publication very similar. SOCIAL ECONOMIC INDEXES FOR AREAS (SEIFA), 2001 RELEASE SEIFA 2001 has been developed especially for those interested in the assessment of the welfare of Australian communities. Based on recent data from the 2001 Census, the indexes allow ranking of geographic areas, providing a method of determining the level of social and economic well-being in those areas. Although based on the same 2001 Census data, the indexes can provide a more effective and standardized means of comparison of areas than the original source data would alone. For instance, they show where the affluent (as opposed to just high income earning) live, and where the disadvantage (as opposed to the unemployed) live. SEIFA 2001 provides information and rankings for a wide range of geographic areas from small areas such as Collection Districts to large areas such as Local Government Areas. You can also customize areas to your own specifications. SEIFA 2001 is available as a standalone product or as an add-on module for use with CDATA 2001. It is Microsoft Windows Operating Systems compliant and will operate on WIN 98SE, 2000, and XP and, WIN NT 4.0. The interface has been designed for ease of use and has on-line help. The price for Tasmanian data is $1,000 and for Australian data is $2,500. SELECTED RECENT RELEASES General 1252.0.55.001 - National Localities Index, Australia, Electronic delivery (released July 2003) The National Localities Index provides Statistical Local Area (SLA) codes for over 32,000 Australian localities. It can be used to assign Statistical Local Area, Statistical Subdivision, Statistical Division and state/territory codes as defined in the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC 1216.0.) The index is updated with each new edition of the ASGC. A streets sub-index enables accurate coding for addresses in localities that straddle SLA boundaries. 1305.6 - Tasmania at a Glance, 2003, brochure (July 2003) 1349.0 - Information Paper: A Guide to Interpreting Time Series - Monitoring trends, 2003 (August 2003) This paper explains why, in ABS publications, the main features and commentaries sections concerning most time series are increasingly emphasising the trend series rather than the seasonally adjusted or original data. Includes the most recent estimates of the population in five-year age groups; numbers (and some rates) of births, deaths, infant deaths, interstate and overseas movements. It presents data for drug-induced deaths registered in the years 1991 to 2001 (the latest year for which deaths data are available). 4102.0 - Australian Social Trends, 2003 (June 2003) Presents statistical analysis and commentary on a wide range of current social issues as well as how social conditions differ across Australian states and territories. A set of international tables also compares Australia with 17 other nations. 4509.0 - Crime and Safety, Australia, April 2002 (June 2003) Contains summary data on household break-ins, attempted break-ins and motor vehicle theft; and personal robberies, assaults and sexual assaults, in the 12 months prior to the survey. Provides information on the most recent incident including whether it was reported to the police and offender information. Data are classified by demographic characteristics. Includes some state and territory data and some limited comparisons with the 1993, 1995 and 1998 Crime and Safety Surveys. 4512.0 - Corrective Services, Australia, (June 2003) - Contains national information on persons in custodial corrective services in Australia. Monthly information is presented for each state and territory. 6105.0 - Australian Labour Market Statistics, April Quarter 2003 (July 2003) This publication is the flagship release for all ABS labour statistics. It draws together data from a range of sources, mostly ABS household and business surveys, to provide an overall picture of the labour market. The publication is also used to release annual data on Indigenous labour force status, and annual supplementary measures of labour underutilisation.
