Preliminary estimates show the total area of vines reported increased by 8% to a record 160,000 hectares in 2001-02. Increases were reported in all states and territories. The total area of vines reported in South Australia increased by 10% to 68,400 hectares and in New South Wales there was an 8% increase in the reported total to 37,300 hectares.

The total production of grapes increased by 11% to a record 1.7 million tonnes in 2001-02. The largest producing state, South Australia, recorded only a modest increase in production, up by 2% to 693,000 tonnes. The next largest producing states, however, recorded significant increases: Victorian production increased by 12% to 493,000 tonnes and New South Wales production increased by 26% to 440,000 tonnes.
