JUNE KEY POINTS


TREND ESTIMATES (MONTHLY CHANGE)

  • EMPLOYMENT increased to 10,161,000
  • UNEMPLOYMENT decreased to 526,900
  • UNEMPLOYMENT RATE decreased to 4.9%
  • PARTICIPATION RATE increased slightly, but the rounded estimate remained at 64.6%.


SEASONALLY ADJUSTED ESTIMATES (MONTHLY CHANGE)

EMPLOYMENT
  • increased by 52,000 to 10,194,200. Full-time employment increased by 24,400 to 7,277,900 and part-time employment increased by 27,600 to 2,916,300.

UNEMPLOYMENT
  • increased by 7,400 to 529,100. The number of persons looking for full-time work decreased by 1,400 to 370,200 while the number of persons looking for part-time work increased by 8,800 to 158,900.

UNEMPLOYMENT RATE
  • remained at 4.9%. The male unemployment rate remained at 4.8% and the female unemployment rate increased slightly, but the rounded estimate remained at 5.1%.

PARTICIPATION RATE
  • increased by 0.3 percentage points to 64.8%.

SAMPLING ERRORS

The estimates in this publication are based on a sample survey. Because the entire population is not enumerated, the published estimates and the movements derived from them are subject to sampling variability. Standard errors give a measure of this variability and appear on pages 27 and 28.


The 95% confidence intervals below provide another way of looking at the variability inherent in estimates from sample surveys. The interval bounded by the two limits is the 95% confidence interval. A 95% confidence interval has a 95% chance of including the true value of the estimate.

PRINCIPAL LABOUR FORCE SERIES TREND ESTIMATES


EMPLOYED PERSONS

The trend estimate of employed persons rose from 8,365,800 in June 1996 to 9,056,500 in September 2000. The trend then fell slightly to 9,037,400 in January 2001, before generally rising to stand at a high of 10,161,000 in June 2006.

UNEMPLOYED PERSONS

The trend estimate of unemployed persons rose from 745,500 in June 1996 to 771,700 in February 1997. The trend then generally fell to 583,700 in September 2000, before rising to 685,800 in October 2001. The trend then fell to 532,800 in January 2005, before rising to 549,000 in December 2005. Since then, the trend has fallen to stand at 526,900 in June 2006.

UNEMPLOYMENT RATE

The trend unemployment rate rose from 8.2% in June 1996 to 8.4% in February 1997, before falling to 6.1% in September 2000. After rising to 7.0% in October 2001, the trend fell to 5.1% in July 2005. The trend rose slightly to 5.2% in December 2005, before falling to stand at 4.9% in June 2006.

UNEMPLOYED PERSONS TREND ESTIMATES


UNEMPLOYED MALES


TOTAL

The trend estimate of unemployed males rose from 437,800 in June 1996 to 451,000 in March 1997. The trend then fell to 342,300 in July 2000, before rising to 394,600 in September 2001. The trend estimate then fell to 280,000 in April 2005, before rising to 301,000 in December 2005. Since then, the trend has fallen to stand at 279,800 in June 2006.

MALES LOOKING FOR FULL-TIME WORK

The trend estimate of males looking for full-time work generally decreased from 389,100 in June 1996 to 287,900 in June 2000. The trend then rose to 329,800 in October 2001, before generally falling to 220,900 in May 2005. The trend estimate then rose to 236,700 in December 2005, before falling to stand at 221,700 in June 2006.

MALES LOOKING FOR PART-TIME WORK

Although fluctuating, the trend estimate of unemployed males looking for part-time work has increased from 48,600 in June 1996 to 66,200 in October 2002. The trend then generally fell to 56,000 in November 2003. Although continuing to fluctuate, the trend estimate then rose to 65,000 in January 2006, before falling to stand at 58,000 in June 2006.

UNEMPLOYED FEMALES


TOTAL

The trend estimate of unemployed females rose from 307,700 in June 1996 to 321,400 in January 1997. The trend then fell to 240,000 in September 2000, before rising to 291,900 in November 2001. Since then, the trend estimate has generally fallen to stand at 247,200 in June 2006.

FEMALES LOOKING FOR FULL-TIME WORK

The trend estimate of females looking for full-time work rose from 211,100 in June 1996 to 223,700 in February 1997, before falling to 152,800 in September 2000. The trend then increased to 188,900 in October 2001. Since then, the trend has generally fallen to stand at 146,300 in June 2006.

FEMALES LOOKING FOR PART-TIME WORK

The trend estimate of unemployed females looking for part-time work has fluctuated over the last 10 years, from 96,600 in June 1996 to a high of 110,100 in April 2001. The trend estimate currently stands at 100,900 in June 2006.
