CENSUS

Labour Force estimates for July may include some employment generated by the progressive training of temporary staff recruited by the ABS to conduct the 2006 Census of Population and Housing. The progressive nature of this recruitment makes it difficult to estimate the net addition to employment from this activity for July. Employment estimates for August will also include temporary employment of persons in the conduct of the Census. It is expected an estimate of the size of the effect of the August recruitment activity on estimates for that month will be included in the next issue of this publication, due for release on 7 September 2006.

The net addition to employment for the month of August due to the previous censuses was estimated to be about 10,000 persons in both 2001 and 1996.

SAMPLING ERRORS

The estimates in this publication are based on a sample survey. Because the entire population is not enumerated, the published estimates and the movements derived from them are subject to sampling variability. Standard errors give a measure of this variability and appear on pages 27 and 28.

The 95% confidence intervals below provide another way of looking at the variability inherent in estimates from sample surveys. The interval bounded by the two limits is the 95% confidence interval. A 95% confidence interval has a 95% chance of including the true value of the estimate.
