The impacts of the poor seasonal conditions in the eastern states of Australia continue to be reflected in the August 2018 data.
Both cattle and sheep slaughters remain high, with sheep slaughters reaching a ten year high, up 46.1% year-on-year.
Lamb slaughters continued to decrease this month, down 2.8% from July in trend terms, the largest August fall sincetrend estimates were introduced in 1979.
Livestock and meat slaughter monthly trend movements for August 2018:
Cattle slaughter increased by 7,500 head (or 1.1%) for the month ending August 2018 compared with the previous month and increased by 65,800 head (or 10.7%) year-on-year.
Calf slaughter increased by 640 head (or 1.7%) in the month ending August 2018 compared with the previous month and increased by 1,300 head (or 3.7%) year-on-year.
Sheep slaughter increased by 40,300 head (or 4.2%) for the month ending August 2018 compared with the previous month and increased by 312,400 head (or 46.1%) year-on-year.
Lamb slaughter decreased by 54,700 head (or 2.8%) for the month ending August 2018 compared with the previous month and decreased by 41,300 head (or 2.2%) year-on-year.
Pig slaughter remained steady for the month ending August 2018 compared to the previous month and increased by 5,400 head (or 1.2%) year-on-year.
