INTRODUCTION
This chapter provides an introduction to the Recorded Crime - Offenders statistical collection and how this information fits within the broader criminal justice system context. The States and Territories summary chapter presents data about offenders proceeded against by police during the period 1 July 2011 to 30 June 2012 for each of the states and territories. New South Wales data exclude offenders proceeded against under the NSW Young Offenders Act 1997. Data relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander offenders are presented for New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory only. The Police Proceedings summary chapter presents selected data relating to police proceedings, providing a count of all separate occasions where an offender has had legal action initiated against them during the period 1 July 2011 to 30 June 2012. Data are presented for all states and territories, except for Western Australia.
