  • Perth's Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased 0.8% in the September quarter 2009. This was similar to the June quarter increase (0.8%), which followed two quarters of decline.
  • Financial and insurance services (2.1%), Housing (2%), Transportation (1.7%) and Recreation (1.5%) were the most significant contributors to the September increase.
  • In contrast, the September quarter saw price decreases in Clothing and footwear (-4.5%), with Men's outerwear (-10.4%) and Men's footwear (-9.9%) having the largest decreases. The price of Food also decreased slightly (-0.8%).




  • In the year to September 2009, Perth's CPI rose 1.2%, a similar percentage rise shown in the weighted average for the eight Australian capital cities (1.3%). All the capital cities recorded annual rises, with Darwin having the largest increase (2.7%) followed by Brisbane (1.9%), while Melbourne had the smallest increase (0.6%).
  • Over the year to September 2009 the main contributors to Perth's CPI increase were Health and Education while the negative contributors were Financial and insurance services and Transportation.


  • The annual increase from September 2008 to September 2009 for Perth (1.2%) was the lowest CPI increase since March 1998 (-0.2%).
  • While Perth had relatively high annual CPI increases in the three years prior to December 2007, since that time the Perth CPI has been close to the weighted average for the eight capital cities.
