The Publication
This publication presents monthly information on sales of new motor vehicles in each state/territory in original, seasonally adjusted and trend estimated terms. The original data are sourced from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries. Sales data are available for passenger vehicles, sports utility vehicles (SUVs), other vehicles and total vehicles at the state/territory and national levels.
JUNE 2006 KEY POINTS
Trend
Trend estimates for total sales of new motor vehicles have been in decline since March 2005. The June 2006 trend estimate (78,788) decreased 0.6% compared with the May 2006 estimate.
The 'other vehicle' category recorded the largest decrease from May 2006 to June 2006, falling 1.2%. Over the same period, passenger vehicles decreased 0.4% and sports utility vehicles decreased 0.5%.
Trend estimates for passenger vehicles have been decreasing since June 2005, sports utility vehicles since March 2005 and other vehicles since September 2005.
Western Australia and Tasmania were the only states or territories to show an increase in their trend estimate from May 2006 to June 2006, increasing 0.9% and 0.7% respectively.
Seasonally adjusted
The June 2006 seasonally adjusted estimate for total sales of new motor vehicles (78,510) decreased 1.7% compared with the May 2006 estimate.
Increases were shown in three states and territories. These were Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory with increases of 7.5%, 4.6% and 3.7% respectively. The largest decrease occurred in South Australia with a 4.5% drop.
Over this period, sports utility vehicles were the only vehicle type to increase (up 3.0%). Passenger vehicles fell 1.8% and other vehicles 5.1%.

Trend estimates are likely to be revised when new seasonally adjusted estimates become available. For further information, see Explanatory Notes, paragraphs 11 and 12.
The graph below presents the effect of two possible scenarios on the previous trend estimates.
1 | The July 2006 seasonally adjusted estimate of total vehicle sales is higher than the June 2006 seasonally adjusted estimate by 3.6%. |

The percentage change of 3.6% was chosen because the average absolute percentage change over the last 10 years has been 3.6%.
