VALUE OF CONSTRUCTION WORK DONE, VOLUME TERMS

Trend estimates

  • The trend estimate for the value of total engineering construction work done rose 1.1% in the December 2003 quarter. This is the eleventh consecutive quarterly rise.
  • The trend estimate for the value of work done for the private sector rose 3.0% in the December 2003 quarter, the ninth consecutive quarterly rise. Work done for the public sector fell 1.0% in the December 2003 quarter.

Seasonally adjusted estimates
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate for the value of total engineering construction work done in the December 2003 quarter rose 6.2%, to $6,435.8m. This is the highest estimate since the current series began in the September quarter 1986.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate for the value of work done for the private sector rose 10.8%, to $3,817.0m, in the December 2003 quarter. The value of work done for the public sector rose 0.1%, following a 5.0% fall in the September 2003 quarter.

Original estimates
  • The value of work done in the December 2003 quarter rose 11.0%, to $6,605.1m, following an 10.4% fall in the September quarter.
  • The value of work done for the private sector rose 10.0%, to $3,946.1m, in the December 2003 quarter. This is the highest quarterly estimate since the current series began in the September 1986 quarter. The value of work done for the public sector rose 12.6% following a 25.1% fall in the September quarter.

CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

The seasonally adjusted and trend series have been revised as a result of the annual review of concurrent seasonal factors. See paragraphs 16-21 of the Explanatory Notes.


Commencing from this issue, a new Appendix (page 41) lists electronic tables available from the ABS website and Ausstats.

SIGNIFICANT REVISIONS THIS QUARTER

Revisions have been made to the June and September 2003 quarter estimates of work commenced, work done and work yet to be done for ‘telecommunications’. For the June quarter 2003, telecommunications estimates have been revised downwards by $27.8m for work commenced, $37.8 for work done and $96.5m for work yet to be done. For the September quarter 2003, telecommunications estimates have been revised downwards by $41.9m for work commenced, $74.3 for work done and $74.5m for work yet to be done.
