JUNE QUARTER KEY POINTS



VALUE OF WORK DONE, SEASONALLY ADJUSTED, VOLUME TERMS

  • In seasonally adjusted terms, total building work done fell 6.4% in the June quarter 2003 to $3,278.1m.
  • New residential work done fell 8.9% to $1,798.1m. Work on new houses fell 11.9% to $1,259.4m, while new other residential buildings fell 1.2% from last quarter’s record high to $538.6m. Alterations and additions fell 3.6% to $347.2m.
  • Non-residential building work fell 3.0% to $1,132.9m.


VALUE OF WORK COMMENCED, ORIGINAL, VOLUME TERMS

  • Total building work commenced rose by a marginal 0.5% in the June quarter to $3,482.1m.
  • New residential commencements fell 3.0% to $1,807.7m. New houses fell for the third consecutive quarter, down 8.8% to $1,183.5m, the lowest level for two years. However, new other residential buildings rose 10.4% to $624.2m, the third highest level on record. Alterations and additions rose 9.3% to $364.4m.
  • Non-residential commencements rose 3.3% to $1,310.0m, a level exceeded only by the June quarter 1989.

NUMBER OF DWELLING UNITS COMMENCED, SEASONALLY ADJUSTED
  • In seasonally adjusted terms, the total number of dwellings commenced fell by 7.7% in the June quarter to 10,068 or 19.8% fewer than a year earlier. Commencements of new private sector houses fell for the fourth consecutive quarter, down by 16.9% in the latest quarter, to 6,799 or 25.9% fewer than a year earlier.

CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

Quarterly chain volume data incorporate a new base year, 2001-02, which has resulted in revisions to growth rates, small in most cases, for subsequent periods. In addition, the reference year has been advanced to 2001-02, thereby preserving additivity in the quarters after the reference year. Re-referencing resulted in revisions to levels, but not growth rates, for all periods.

Seasonally adjusted and trend estimates have been revised as a result of the adoption of new seasonal adjustment methodology. Concurrent seasonal adjustment has replaced forward factor methodology for all seasonally adjusted series in this publication. See paragraphs 29 and 30 of the Explanatory Notes.


SIGNIFICANT REVISIONS

Compared with the estimates in original terms published in the previous issue of this publication, the total number of dwellings commenced during the March quarter 2003 has been revised downwards by 144 (-1.4%).
