JUNE QUARTER KEY POINTS


VALUE OF WORK DONE, SEASONALLY ADJUSTED, VOLUME TERMS
  • In seasonally adjusted terms, total building work done fell 0.7% in the June quarter 2003 to $3,829.0m.
  • New residential work done fell 3.1% to $2,098.0m, following seven quarterly increases. New houses fell 7.8% to $1,066.7m, while new other residential buildings rose for the eighth consecutive quarter, up by 2.2% to a record $1,031.3m. Alterations and additions rose 2.1% to $461.0m, the highest level since the June quarter 2000.
  • Non-residential building work rose 2.4% to $1,270.0m, the highest since the June quarter 2000.


VALUE OF WORK COMMENCED, ORIGINAL, VOLUME TERMS
  • Total building work commenced in the June quarter fell 14.5% to $3,119.9m, the lowest level for two years.
  • New residential commencements fell 12.2% to $1,695.6m, the lowest level for two years. New houses rose 9.2% to $1,063.0m, but new other residential buildings fell 33.9% to $632.6m, the lowest level for two years. Alterations and additions rose 15.7% to $451.8m, following falls for three consecutive quarters.
  • Non-residential commencements fell 26.7% to $972.4m.


NUMBER OF DWELLING UNITS COMMENCED, SEASONALLY ADJUSTED
  • In seasonally adjusted terms, the total number of dwellings commenced fell for the fourth consecutive quarter, down 4.3% in the June quarter to 10,926 or 17.2% fewer than a year earlier. Commencements of new private sector houses fell 2.3% to 5,475.

CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

Quarterly chain volume data incorporate a new base year, 2001-02, which has resulted in revisions to growth rates, small in most cases, for subsequent periods. In addition, the reference year has been advanced to 2001-02, thereby preserving additivity in the quarters after the reference year. Re-referencing resulted in revisions to levels, but not growth rates, for all periods.

Seasonally adjusted and trend estimates have been revised as a result of the adoption of new seasonal adjustment methodology. Concurrent seasonal adjustment has replaced forward factor methodology for all seasonally adjusted series in this publication. See paragraphs 30 and 31 of the Explanatory Notes.
