BUILDING WORK DONE
- The trend estimate of the value of total building work done rose 1.1% in the March 2016 quarter.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of total building work done fell 0.7% to $25,187.5m in the March quarter, following a rise of 2.9% in the December 2015 quarter.
NEW RESIDENTIAL BUILDING WORK DONE
- The trend estimate of the value of new residential building work done rose 2.8% in the March quarter. The value of work done on new houses fell 0.7% while new other residential building rose 7.1%.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of new residential building work done rose 2.0% to $14,735.1m. Work done on new houses fell 1.5% to $7,784.5m, while new other residential building rose 6.1% to $6,950.6m.
NON-RESIDENTIAL WORK DONE
- The trend estimate of the value of non-residential building work done fell 1.2% in the March quarter.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of non-residential building work done in the quarter fell 4.9%, following a rise of 2.5% in the December 2015 quarter.

TOTAL DWELLINGS
- The trend estimate for the total number of dwelling units commenced rose 1.8% in the March 2016 quarter following a rise of 1.2% in the December quarter.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate for the total number of dwelling units commenced rose 5.7% to 59,684 dwellings in the March quarter following a fall of 1.3% in the December quarter.
NEW PRIVATE SECTOR HOUSES
- The trend estimate for new private sector house commencements fell 1.4% in the March quarter following a fall of 1.5% in the December quarter.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate for new private sector house commencements rose 0.3% to 27,586 dwellings in the March quarter following a fall of 4.6% in the December quarter.
NEW PRIVATE SECTOR OTHER RESIDENTIAL BUILDING
- The trend estimate for new private sector other residential building commencements rose 5.5% in the March quarter following a rise of 4.9% in the December quarter.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate for new private sector other residential building rose 10.6% to 30,676 dwellings in the March quarter following a rise of 3.3% in the December quarter.

ABOUT THIS ISSUE
This publication updates the preliminary estimates released in
Construction Work Done, Australia (cat. no. 8755.0) on 25 May 2016. The data in this publication are based on a response rate of approximately 90% of the value of building work done during the quarter. The data are subject to revision when returns from the following quarter are processed. Final data for the March quarter 2016 will be released in the next release of this publication, Building Activity, Australia (cat. no. 8752.0) on 12 October 2016.
SIGNIFICANT REVISIONS THIS ISSUE
Compared to the estimate published in
Building Activity, Australia December quarter 2015 (cat. no. 8752.0) released on 13 April 2016:
- the total value of work done in Australia during the December quarter 2015 has been revised upwards by $958.9m or 3.6%.
- the total value of work commenced in Australia during the December quarter 2015 has been revised upwards by $1,588.7m or 6.4%. This was driven by a 5.9% ($1,044.4m) revision to total residential commencements and a 7.6% ($544.2m) revision to non-residential commencements.
- the number of dwelling unit commencements in the December quarter 2015 has been revised upwards by 2,277 dwellings or 4.1%.
DATA NOTE
Several time series spreadsheets contain 'np' (not available for publication) annotations from the September quarter 2012 onwards. This is due to confidential data being contained in these series.
For the March Building Activity release each year, the ABS publishes revisions that have been made to Building Activity estimates prior to the December quarter. In this release, revisions have been provided for the time period from December 2011 to September 2015 and include revisions resulting from the Building Approvals Annual Review.
