BUILDING WORK DONE
- The trend estimate of the value of total building work done fell 1.4% in the December 2018 quarter.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of total building work done fell 2.6% to $29,399.2m following a a fall of 1.7% in the September 2018 quarter.
NEW RESIDENTIAL BUILDING WORK DONE
- The trend estimate of the value of new residential building work done fell 2.0% in the December quarter. The value of work done on new houses fell 2.6%, while new other residential building fell 1.2%.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of new residential building work done fell 4.0% to $16,644.3m. Work done on new houses fell 5.1% to $8,724.4m, while new other residential building fell 2.7% to $7,920.0m.
NON-RESIDENTIAL WORK DONE
- The trend estimate of the value of non-residential building work done fell 0.7% in the December quarter.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of non-residential building work done in the quarter was flat following a fall of 2.2% in the September quarter.

TOTAL DWELLINGS
- The trend estimate for the total number of dwelling units commenced fell 9.5% in the December quarter following a fall of 6.7% in the September quarter.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate for the total number of dwelling units commenced fell 16.3% to 46,706 dwellings in the December quarter following a fall of 3.8% in the September quarter.
NEW PRIVATE SECTOR HOUSES
- The trend estimate for new private sector house commencements fell 5.8% in the December quarter following a fall of 4.4% in the September quarter.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate for new private sector house commencements fell 8.0% to 26,754 dwellings in the December quarter following a fall of 4.2% in the September quarter.
NEW PRIVATE SECTOR OTHER RESIDENTIAL BUILDING
- The trend estimate for new private sector other residential building commencements fell 14.7% in the December quarter following a fall of 9.5% in the September quarter.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate for new private sector other residential building fell 27.3% to 18,738 dwellings in the December quarter following a fall of 4.5% in the September quarter.

This publication updates the preliminary estimates released in
Construction Work Done, Australia (cat. no. 8755.0) on 27 February 2019. The data in this publication are based on a response rate of approximately 90% of the value of building work done during the quarter. The data are subject to revision when returns from the following quarter are processed. Final data for the December quarter 2018 will be released in the next release of this publication,
Building Activity, Australia (cat. no. 8752.0) on 10 July 2019.
SIGNIFICANT REVISIONS THIS ISSUE
Compared to the estimate published in
Building Activity, Australia September quarter 2018 (cat. no. 8752.0) released on 16 January 2019:
- the total value of work done in Australia during the September quarter 2018 has been revised upwards by $368.5m or 1.1%.
- the total value of work commenced in Australia during the September quarter 2018 has been revised upwards by $1,170.3m or 3.8%. This was driven by a 4.6% ($938.6m) revision to total residential commencements and a 2.3% ($231.7m) revision to non-residential commencements.
- the number of dwelling unit commencements in the September quarter 2018 has been revised upwards by 2,491 dwellings or 4.4%.
