ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION

This publication presents results from the March and June quarters 2005 Survey of Tourist Accommodation (STA) for the following categories of establishments:

  • licensed hotels and resorts with facilities and 5 or more rooms
  • motels, private hotels and guest houses with facilities and 5 or more rooms
  • serviced apartments with 5 or more units
  • caravan parks with 40 or more powered sites
  • holiday flats, units and houses of letting entities with 15 or more rooms or units
  • visitor hostels with 25 or more bed spaces.

CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

The scope of the quarterly STA was expanded from March quarter 2005. Caravan parks, holiday flats, units and houses and visitor hostels, as defined above, are now in scope of the survey, and the size cut-off for licensed hotels and resorts, motels and guest houses, and serviced apartments has been reduced from 15 rooms to 5 rooms.

Using the expanded scope, this issue presents data from the March and June quarters 2005. Future results will be published on a quarterly basis.

Data by tourism region and state/territory star grade are no longer presented in this publication. These data are included in the data cubes that accompany this publication. Separate data cubes are available for March and June quarters 2005.

GEOGRAPHY CORRECTIONS

In March quarter 2005, an automatic coding process was used to update geography for all establishments in the STA. This process assigned incorrect statistical local area (SLA) geography to 47 hotels, motels and serviced apartments in the 15 or more room series, affecting 56 SLAs across most states/territories. The SLAs most significantly affected were in Townsville and Cairns. These errors have been rectified for the June quarter 2005 data, however to maintain confidentiality of the affected establishments, data for March quarter 2005 will not be revised.

The seasonally adjusted estimate of the total accommodation takings rose by 9.8% to $1,545.0 million from June quarter 2004 to June quarter 2005.

Room occupancy rate

The trend estimate of the room occupancy rate for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms rose by 1.7 percentage points from 61.9% in June quarter 2004 to 63.6% in June quarter 2005. This rate has been increasing since the September quarter 2003.

The seasonally adjusted estimate of the room occupancy rate increased by 1.8 percentage points to 63.7% from June quarter 2004 to June quarter 2005.

Accommodation takings

In June quarter 2005, accommodation takings for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 5 or more rooms were $1,460.7 million. The average takings per room night occupied for these establishments was $120.40.

Accommodation takings for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms for June quarter were $1,395.0 million, at an average of $123.00 per room night occupied. For establishments with 5 to 14 rooms, accommodation takings were $65.6 million, at an average of $83.30 per room night occupied.

The contributions to accommodation takings in June quarter 2005 for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 5 or more rooms were highest in New South Wales ($475.8 million) and Queensland ($394.6 million).


Room occupancy rate

The room occupancy rate for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 5 or more rooms was 58.3% in June quarter 2005.

For hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms, the room occupancy rate was 59.7%, while for 5 to 14 room hotels, motels and serviced apartments, the room occupancy rate was 43.5%.

Room nights occupied

Total room nights occupied were 12.1 million in June quarter 2005 for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 5 or more rooms. Room nights occupied were highest in New South Wales (3.7 million) and Queensland (3.4 million).

For hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms, room nights occupied were 11.3 million in June quarter 2005, while for establishments with 5 to 14 rooms, room nights occupied were 0.8 million.


Average length of stay

The average length of stay in June quarter 2005 for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms was 2.2 days. For establishments with 5 to 14 rooms, the average length of stay for June quarter was 1.7 days.

Queensland (2.6 days) reported the longest average length of stay for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms, followed by Western Australia and the Northern Territory (2.4 days). The shortest average length of stay was in Tasmania with 1.9 days.

For establishments with 5 to 14 rooms, the longest average length of stay was reported in Western Australia (2.1 days), followed by the Northern Territory (2.0 days).


Star grading

In June quarter 2005, the room occupancy rate for five-star hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 5 or more rooms was 68.1% compared with 31.2% for one-star. For hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms, the room occupancy rate was 68.3% for five-star establishments compared with 33.3% for one-star.

For establishments with 5 to 14 rooms, three-star (48.5%) and four-star (45.8%) establishments had the highest room occupancy rates, compared with one-star establishments at 27.8%.

Accommodation takings

In June quarter 2005, accommodation takings for caravan parks were $188.5 million. New South Wales ($63.9 million) had the highest accommodation takings for all caravan parks for June quarter 2005.

Short-term caravan park accommodation takings were $154.5 million in June quarter 2005, while takings for long-term caravan parks were $34.0 million in that quarter.

Accommodation takings for holiday flats, units and houses were $99.6 million in June quarter 2005. For visitor hostels, accommodation takings were $43.2 million.


Occupancy rate

The site occupancy rate for all caravan parks in June quarter 2005 was 50.4%. Short-term caravan park site occupancy rates were 46.6%, while the rate for long-term caravan park sites was 74.8% in June quarter 2005.

For holiday flats, units and houses, the unit occupancy rate was 41.7% in June quarter 2005.

The bed occupancy rate for visitor hostels in June quarter 2005 was 45.2%. Queensland (54.6%), New South Wales (49.6%) and Western Australia (45.2%) had the highest bed occupancy rates for visitor hostels in June quarter 2005.
