INTRODUCTION

The following tables provide key figures for the financial and economic performance of Retail and Wholesale businesses in Australia during 2012–13. Businesses that contribute to the statistics in this publication are classified to Division F: Wholesale trade and Division G: Retail trade, in accordance with the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC), 2006 edition (cat. no. 1292.0).

Retail businesses are classified to:
  • Subdivision 39 Motor vehicle and motor vehicle parts retailing
  • Subdivision 40 Fuel retailing
  • Subdivision 41 Food retailing
  • Subdivision 42 Other store-based retailing
  • Subdivision 43 Non-store retailing and retail commission based buying and/or selling

Wholesale businesses are classified to:
  • Subdivision 33 Basic material wholesaling
  • Subdivision 34 Machinery and equipment wholesaling
  • Subdivision 35 Motor vehicle and motor vehicle parts wholesaling
  • Subdivision 36 Grocery, liquor and tobacco product wholesaling
  • Subdivision 37 Other goods wholesaling
  • Subdivision 38 Commission-based wholesaling

KEY POINTS
  • At end of June 2013 there were 1,271,957 persons working in Retail Industry. Over half (53.9% or 685,883) were employed in Other store-based retailing.
  • Total wages and salaries paid by the Retail Industry during 2012–13 was $40.4b.
  • Retail businesses generated $380.1b in total income and incurred $363.4b in total expenses.
  • Operating profit before tax (OPBT) for the Retail Industry was $18.3b. Food retailing and Other store-based retailing accounted for 76.5% of total Retail Industry OPBT.
  • Industry value added (IVA) by Retail businesses was $69.7b which represented 7% of Australian industry value added for 2012–13.

KEY POINTS
  • At end of June 2013 there were 553,730 persons working in Wholesale Industry. Over half (54.6% or 302,390 persons) were employed in Machinery and equipment wholesaling and Other goods wholesaling.
  • Total wages and salaries paid by the Wholesale Industry during 2012–13 was $34.7b. Almost 40% (or $13.6b) of total wages were paid by Machinery and equipment wholesaling.
  • Wholesale businesses generated $493.1b in total income and incurred $477.3b in total expenses.
  • Operating profit before tax (OPBT) for the Wholesale Industry was $18.1b. Machinery and equipment wholesaling and Other goods wholesaling accounted for almost half (49.1% or $8.9b) of total Wholesale Industry OPBT.
  • Industry value added (IVA) by Wholesale businesses was $63.3b which represented 6.3% of Australian industry value added for 2012–13.
