GLOSSARY

Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC)

The Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) is a classification that provides a framework for organising data about businesses by grouping business units carrying out similar productive activities. The ANZSIC has been jointly developed by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and Statistics New Zealand (Statistics NZ) and provides a basis for the standardised collection, analysis and dissemination of economic data on an industry basis.

ANZSIC is a hierarchical classification with four levels, namely divisions (the broadest level), subdivisions, groups and classes (the finest level). At the divisional level, the main purpose is to provide a limited number of categories which will provide a broad overall picture of the economy. The subdivision, group and class levels provide increasingly detailed dissections of the broad categories.

Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS)

The Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) is the new geographical framework used by the ABS. It brings together all regions for which the ABS publishes statistics within the one framework and is used for the collection and dissemination of geographically classified statistics.

Comcare

Comcare partners with workers, their employers and unions to keep workers healthy and safe, and reduce the incidence and cost of workplace injury and disease.

Comcare implements the Australian Government’s policies in federal workplaces to drive social inclusion and productivity. Comcare are guided by three outcomes:

    • The protection of the health, safety and welfare at work of workers covered by the Comcare scheme through education, assurance and enforcement.
    • An early and safe return to work and access to compensation for injured workers covered by the Comcare scheme by working in partnership with employers to create best practice in rehabilitation and by providing quick and accurate management of workers’ compensation claims.
    • Access to compensation for people with asbestos-related diseases where the Commonwealth has a liability.

Greater Capital City Statistical Area (GCCSA)
The GCCSAs represent the socio-economic extent of each of the eight State and Territory capital cities. This provides a stable and relevant geographic definition for the release of socio-economic survey data collected only within capital cities as well as other survey data requiring large population output regions. Within each State and Territory, the area not defined as being part of the greater capital city is represented by a Rest of State region. As GCCSAs are designed to represent a broad socio-economic definition of each city, the greater capital city boundary includes people who regularly socialise, shop or work within the city, but live in the small towns and rural areas surrounding the city.

Remuneration
Remuneration (as reported by WorkCoverSA) is made up of the gross wages/salaries and other payments made to or for the benefit of a worker including superannuation contributions, fees or bonuses, payments to sub-contractors as deemed workers, fringe benefits and other allowances.

South Australian WorkCover Industrial Classification (SAWIC)
The South Australian WorkCover Industrial Classification (SAWIC) system has a structure that divides all industries into broad divisions. It also classifies various industries within divisions by SAWIC code. The WorkCoverSA data used in this publication was concorded from SAWIC to ANZSIC to align with existing ABS publications.

Statistical Area Level 3 (SA3)
Statistical Areas Level 3 (SA3s) are built from aggregations of whole Statistical Area Level 2 (SA2) boundaries to represent regions of between approximately 30,000 people and 130,000 people to cover the whole of Australia. These boundaries reflect a combination of widely recognised informal regions as well as existing administrative regions such as State Government Regions in rural areas and local Government Areas in urban areas.

WorkCoverSA
WorkCoverSA manages the South Australian Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Scheme, which provides protection to workers and employers in the event of workplace injury. Further information can be found on the WorkCoverSA website http://www.workcover.com.
