01/04/2008 Note: Additional Material Data Cubes - These data cubes present additional data to that previously released in Selected Characteristics of Australian Business, 2005-06, (cat. no. 8167.0) on 1 February 2008. The data cubes present statistics on business structure and arrangements, markets and competition, finance, innovation, business performance and barriers to business activities or performance. Statistics are classified by Australian and New Zealand Standard Industry Classification at the division level; business size based on employment; some outputs cross-classified by industry and business size; and a limited number of outputs by state/territory. These data cubes represent the final release of data related to business characteristics and innovation from the 2005-06 Business Characteristics Survey and the full extent of releasable data.
NOTES
INTRODUCTION
This release from the 2005-06 Business Characteristics Survey (BCS) presents summary data for a selection of topics including: business structure; business performance; business innovation; business finance; business markets and competition; and barriers to business activities or performance. Much of the data contained within this release has not been previously collected. Further detail for these topics will be released as spreadsheets via the ABS website by the end of March 2008, please see Explanatory Note 31.
The data in this release, the third from the BCS, are additional to those already published in Summary of IT Use and Innovation in Australian Business, 2005-06 (cat. no.8166.0) and Business Use of Information Technology, 2005-06 (cat. no. 8129.0).
Detailed analyses (including longitudinal analysis) on the range of data collected from this and future BCS', supplemented by financial performance data from other ABS and non-ABS sources, are currently underway and are expected to be released progressively by the ABS over the next two to three years, please refer to Explanatory Note 36.
The approach to quality assurance for the BCS aims to make the best use of ABS resources to meet user prioritised requirements - both in terms of data quality and timing of release. The approach specifies the level and degree to which each data item is quality assured, noting that only some of the total output from the BCS is able to be quality assured to the highest standards. Different priorities are assigned to groups of data items, with highest priority being assigned to key point in time data on business use of IT and innovation.
In general, the data items contained in this release have a lower user priority and, therefore, have been given relatively less attention during the quality assurance phase of processing. Most of the data contained in this release are 'as reported' by businesses with limited editing and cross-validation being applied. References to any relevant quality issues that the reader should take into consideration are made within the commentary associated with the respective data item.
