APRIL KEY POINTS

Livestock and meat production monthly trend movements for April 2016

• Cattle slaughter decreased by 3,610 head or 1 percent in April 2016 compared with March 2016 and by 139,589 head or 18 percent year-on-year.
• The number of calves slaughtered in April 2016 increased by 3,077, or 7 percent, with the majority of the increase occurring in New South Wales (up 7 percent) and Victoria (up 2 percent). Calf slaughter for April 2016 decreased by 22 percent year-on-year.
• Sheep slaughter in April 2016 remained stable compared with March 2016 despite increased slaughter numbers in New South Wales and Western Australia, which were up by 1 percent and 4 percent, respectively.
• Lamb slaughter continued to rise in April 2016, with increased production in Victoria and New South Wales offsetting reductions in slaughter numbers in Queensland and South Australia. Nationally, 2 million lambs were slaughtered in April, an increase of 3 percent year-on-year.
• Pig slaughter increased in April 2016 in all major production states except Queensland. Over the year to April 2016 pig slaughter increased by 5,686 or 1 percent.
