TREND ESTIMATES

  • In September quarter 2006, the trend estimate for the number of cattle slaughtered remained steady at 2.0 million.
  • In September quarter 2006, the trend estimate for the number of sheep slaughtered increased by 4% to 3.2 million.
  • In September quarter 2006, the trend estimate for the number of lambs slaughtered increased by 3% to 5.0 million.
  • In September quarter 2006, the trend estimate for pigs slaughtered decreased slightly to 1.3 million.

The trend estimate for the number of cattle slaughtered in September quarter 2006 remained steady at 2.0 million.

The trend estimate for the number of calves slaughtered in September quarter 2006 decreased slightly to 206,000.



SHEEP AND LAMBS

In September quarter 2006, the trend estimate for the number of sheep slaughtered increased by 4% to 3.2 million. The number of lambs slaughtered increased by 3% to 5.0 million.



PIGS

In September quarter 2006, the trend estimate for the number of pigs slaughtered decreased slightly to 1.3 million.



MEAT PRODUCTION TREND


BEEF

In September quarter 2006, the trend estimate for beef production increased slightly to 536,000 tonnes.



MUTTON AND LAMB

In September quarter 2006, the trend estimate for mutton production increased by 5% to 67,600 tonnes. The trend estimate for lamb production increased by 3% to 102,000 tonnes.

EXPORTS OF LIVE SHEEP

Live sheep exports rose by 57% to 1.2 million in September quarter 2006. Gross value rose by 65% for the quarter, up to $83.6 million. Unit value rose by 5% to $71.68.



EXPORTS OF LIVE CATTLE

In September quarter 2006, live cattle exports rose by 4% to 189,000. Gross value rose by 12% for the quarter, up to $128 million. Unit value rose by 7% to $680.43.
