LIVESTOCK SLAUGHTERED: Trend CATTLE (EXCLUDING CALVES) The trend estimate for the number of cattle slaughtered in September quarter 2004 rose slightly to 2.0 million. CALVES The trend estimate for the number of calves slaughtered in September quarter 2004 fell by 11% to 212,000. SHEEP AND LAMBS In September quarter 2004, the trend estimate for the number of sheep slaughtered remained steady at 2.8 million. The number of lambs slaughtered fell by 3% to 4.0 million, the lowest quarterly trend estimate since March 1999. PIGS In September quarter 2004, the trend estimate for the number of pigs slaughtered fell to 1.3 million. This was the sixth consecutive quarterly decrease and the lowest quarterly trend estimate since December 2001. MEAT PRODUCTION: Trend BEEF In September quarter 2004, the trend estimate for beef production rose by 2% to a record 531,000 tonnes. MUTTON AND LAMB In September quarter 2004, the trend estimate for mutton production fell by 2% to 58,100 tonnes, and the estimate for lamb production fell by 4% to 81,300 tonnes. TOTAL RED MEAT The trend estimate for red meat production rose slightly to 776,000 tonnes in September quarter 2004. This rise was due to increased beef production for the quarter, since veal, mutton, lamb and pig meat production all fell. CHICKEN MEAT The trend estimate for chicken meat production in September quarter 2004 remained steady at 170,000 tonnes. LIVESTOCK PRODUCTS: Trend WHOLE MILK INTAKE BY FACTORIES An improvement in seasonal conditions in June quarter 2004 saw the trend estimate for whole milk intake by factories increase marginally to 2.6 billion litres. BROKERS AND DEALERS RECEIVALS OF TAXABLE WOOL The trend estimate for wool receivals by brokers and dealers for September quarter 2004 fell marginally to 121,000 tonnes. LIVESTOCK EXPORTS: Original EXPORTS OF LIVE SHEEP Live sheep exports increased by 26% to 851,000 in September quarter 2004. The gross value of live sheep exports rose by 31% to $58.8 million, with the unit value increasing to $69.16. EXPORTS OF LIVE CATTLE In September quarter 2004 live cattle exports rose marginally to 172,000.
