SEPTEMBER QTR KEY POINTS


TREND ESTIMATES

  • The trend estimate for beef production for September quarter 2003 fell by 3% to 476,000 tonnes, the lowest quarterly estimate since March quarter 1998.
  • In September quarter 2003, the trend estimate for the number of sheep slaughtered fell by 20% to 2.1 million, the lowest quarterly estimate since March quarter 1984.
  • The trend estimate for the number of pigs slaughtered for September quarter 2003 dropped marginally to 1.4 million after 11 consecutive quarterly increases.

LIVESTOCK SLAUGHTERED: Trend


CATTLE (EXCLUDING CALVES)

The trend estimate for the number of cattle slaughtered in September quarter 2003 fell by 3% to 1.9 million. Useful rains in some areas and falling feed grain prices have allowed producers to hold onto stock.

CALVES

The trend estimate for the number of calves slaughtered in September quarter 2003 fell by 8% to 263,000, in line with the pattern of reduced turnoff for cattle.

SHEEP AND LAMBS

Tight supply saw the trend estimate for sheep slaughtered in September quarter 2003 fall by 20% to 2.1 million, the lowest quarterly estimate since March 1984. The number of lambs slaughtered fell by 4% to 3.9 million, due to low numbers of new season lambs.

PIGS

The trend estimate for the number of pigs slaughtered in September quarter 2003 dropped marginally to 1.4 million, after 11 consecutive quarterly increases.

MEAT PRODUCTION: Trend


BEEF

The trend estimate for beef production fell by 3% to 476,000 tonnes in September quarter 2003, in line with the change in cattle slaughter numbers.

MUTTON AND LAMB

The trend estimate for mutton production fell by 17% to 43,100 tonnes, as sheep slaughterings continued to fall. The trend estimate for lamb production fell by 2% to 78,800 tonnes.

TOTAL RED MEAT

The trend estimate for total red meat production fell by 3% to 712,000 tonnes in September quarter 2003. Decreases were reported for all categories of red meat.

CHICKEN MEAT

The trend estimate for chicken meat production in September quarter 2003 fell marginally to 169,000 tonnes. This was the fourth consecutive quarterly decrease after a long period of generally sustained growth.

WHOLE MILK INTAKE BY FACTORIES

The trend estimate for whole milk intake by factories fell by 2% to 2.5 billion litres in June quarter 2003, with the prolonged drought continuing to reduce milk production levels.

BROKERS AND DEALERS RECEIVALS OF TAXABLE WOOL

The trend estimate for wool receivals by brokers and dealers fell by 3% to 102,000 tonnes. The effects of the long drought, and reduced overseas demand continued to affect wool production levels.

LIVESTOCK EXPORTS: Original


EXPORTS OF LIVE SHEEP

Live sheep exports increased by 13% to 1.1 million in September quarter 2003, with demand from Middle Eastern markets still strong. Gross value of live sheep exports increased to $78.0 million. Unit value remained steady at $71.38.

EXPORTS OF LIVE CATTLE

Drought and oversupply in some Asian markets saw live cattle exports fall by 23% to 163,000 in September quarter 2003. The 10% decrease in unit value (to $499.78), combined with the decline in export numbers, saw gross value of live cattle exports fall to $81.6 million.
