This publication contains estimates of the quantity of grain stored in grain storage facilities operated by bulk grain handling companies and major grain traders in Australia as at 30 September 2003.


KEY POINTS

The total quantity of grain held in storage facilities operated by bulk grain handling companies and major grain traders reduced by 49.7% from 8,607,300 tonnes recorded at 30 June 2003 to 4,328,100 tonnes at 30 September 2003. In the same period, wheat reduced from 5,968,000 tonnes to 2,841,200 tonnes, a fall of 52.4%, and barley fell by 46.3% to 919,400 tonnes from the June figure of 1,711,400 tonnes. The quantity of oats held in storage facilities operated by bulk handling companies and major grain traders fell by 38.5% in the three months to September from 64,200 tonnes recorded at 30 June 2003 to 39,500 tonnes at 30 September 2003.

In the 9 months since the survey commenced, total grain stocks have reduced by 75.0% from 17,296,600 tonnes at 31 December 2002.
