INTRODUCTION

1 The quantity of wheat (milling, feed and other), barley (malting, feed and other), oats, triticale and 'other feed grains, pulses and oilseeds' held in storage facilities operated by large bulk handling companies and major grain traders as measured at the last day of December 2002, and January, February and March 2003, are contained in this publication. 'Other feed grains, pulses and oilseeds' consists of a broad range of grain types including sorghum, cereal rye, maize, vetch, soyabean, sunflower, canola, lupins, field peas, chick peas, faba beans and broad beans for which no break-up by grain type is available.

2 This collection has been undertaken in response to concerns regarding the lack of information on the amount of grain held in storage facilities during the recent period of drought in Australia. It is planned to conduct this survey at monthly intervals until the end of March 2003 and on a quarterly basis thereafter, with the frequency of collection to be reviewed at the end of 2003.

SCOPE AND COVERAGE

3 The collection does not attempt to measure the total amount of grain held in storage facilities in Australia. Regional or small storage operators are not represented in these statistics. Statistics contained in this publication represent the major bulk handling companies and a small selection of other grain storage organisations.

4 The quantity of grain by type, grade, and location (at State level) of storage was collected from all major operators of grain storage facilities in Australia. To avoid the possibility of duplication in reporting, only quantities actually held in storage facilities operated by the selected business, regardless of grain ownership, were collected from each business. This included storage facilities rented from other businesses where the selected business was responsible for the operation of the facility.

5 The quantity of grain shown does not include grain stored on farms across Australia i.e. businesses which are classified to subdivision 01 "Agriculture" of the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC).
