JUNE KEY POINTS


IMPORT PRICE INDEX
  • The Import Price Index rose 3.2% in the June quarter 2018. This follows a rise in the March quarter 2018 of 2.0%.
  • The rise was driven by higher prices paid for Petroleum, petroleum products and related materials (+13.7%), General industrial machinery (+3.3%), and Electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances (+1.7%).
  • Through the year to the June quarter 2018, the Import Price Index rose 6.0%, driven by Petroleum, petroleum products and related materials (+38.2%), and Inorganic chemicals (+40.8%).


EXPORT PRICE INDEX
  • The Export Price Index rose 1.9% in the June quarter 2018. This follows a rise in the March quarter 2018 of 4.9%.
  • The rise was driven by higher prices received for Gas, natural and manufactured (+10.8%), Petroleum, petroleum products and related materials (+8.5%), Cereals and cereal preparations (+6.9%), Meat and meat preparations (+3.8%), and Coal, coke and briquettes (+0.9%).
  • Through the year to the June quarter 2018, the Export Price Index rose 6.6%, driven by Coal, coke and briquettes (+8.5%), Gas, natural and manufactured (+18.8%), and Petroleum, petroleum products and related materials (+34.2%).


EXCHANGE RATE
  • The depreciation of the Australian dollar against the United States dollar had an upward effect on import and export prices in the June quarter 2018.

REVISIONS TO THE IMPORT PRICE INDEX

This June quarter issue of the International Trade Price Indexes, Australia (cat. no. 6457.0) includes revisions to the Import Price Index (IPI) for the December quarter 2017 and March quarter 2018.

The revisions are a result of receiving updated information from survey respondents used to compile the IPI for Telecommunications and sound-recording and reproducing apparatus and equipment. The revision to the IPI may also result in revisions to the estimates of telecommunications equipment volumes published in the Balance of Payments and International Investment Position, Australia, June 2018 (cat. no. 5302.0) to be released on 4 September 2018, as well as volumes published in the Australian National Accounts: National Income, Expenditure and Product, June 2018 (cat. no. 5206.0) which will be released on 5 September 2018.

The most significant revisions affect the following SITC series in the IPI:
  • All groups;
  • 7 Machinery and transport equipment;
  • 76 Telecommunications and sound-recording and reproducing apparatus and equipment.

These series and other related series are annotated in the time series spreadsheets and data cubes.
