EMPLOYED PERSONS
Graph shows, in both trend and seasonally adjusted terms, the monthly uptick in the Employed Persons increasing steadily from approximately 11,500,000 persons in July 2014 to approximately 12,900,000 persons in July 2019.

UNEMPLOYMENT RATE
Graph shows, in both trend and seasonally adjusted terms, the monthly downturn in the Unemployment Rate steadily declining from 6.3 per cent in December 2014 to as low as 5.0 per cent in December 2019, before rising to 5.3 per cent in July 2019.

JULY KEY POINTS

TREND ESTIMATES

Employment increased 24,600 to 12,915,200 persons. Full-time employment increased 15,100 to 8,849,500 persons and part-time employment increased 9,600 to 4,065,700 persons.
Unemployment increased 6,600 to 715,600 persons.
Unemployment rate increased by less than 0.1 pts to 5.3%.
Participation rate increased 0.1 pts to 66.1%.
Monthly hours worked in all jobs increased 0.5 million hours to 1,776.6 million hours.

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED ESTIMATES

Employment increased 41,100 to 12,908,200 persons. Full-time employment increased 34,500 to 8,847,100 persons and part-time employment increased 6,700 to 4,061,100 persons.
Unemployment increased 800 to 712,900 persons.
Unemployment rate remained steady at 5.2%.
Participation rate increased by 0.1 pts to 66.1%.
Monthly hours worked in all jobs increased 8.8 million hours to 1,780.1 million hours.

LABOUR UNDERUTILISATION

The monthly trend underemployment rate remained steady at 8.4%. The monthly underutilisation rate remained steady at 13.6%.
The monthly seasonally adjusted underemployment rate increased 0.2 pts to 8.4%. The monthly underutilisation rate increased 0.2 pts to 13.6%.

MONTHLY HOURS WORKED IN ALL JOBS

Each year, the monthly hours worked in all jobs series are benchmarked to an annual hours worked estimate. This annual process was conducted in July 2019 and resulted in minor revisions to all monthly hours worked in all jobs series. For more information regarding labour force rebenchmarking, please refer to the Feb 2015 article Labour Force, Australia - Rebenchmarking Labour Force Estimates (cat. no. 6202.0) which is published on the ABS website.

ASSESSING VOLATILITY IN THE LABOUR FORCE STATISTICS

This issue includes the latest periodic summary of the ABS' assessment of volatility in Labour Force statistics, which was last published in the June 2015 release of Labour Force, Australia, Detailed - Electronic Delivery (cat. no. 6291.0.55.001).

REVIEW OF SOME INCENTIVES FOR LABOUR FORCE PARTICIPATION AND RETIREMENT AND RETIREMENT INTENTIONS CONTENT

Estimates of changes in the commentary have been calculated using un-rounded estimates, and may be different from, but are more accurate than, movement obtained from the rounded estimates. Graphs also depict un-rounded estimates.

SAMPLING ERROR

The estimates in this publication are based on a sample survey. Published estimates and movements are subject to sampling variability. Standard errors give a measure of sampling variability. The interval bounded by two standard errors is the 95% confidence interval, which provides a way of looking at the variability inherent in estimates. There is a 95% chance that the true value of the estimate lies within that interval.
