WHO IS INDIGENOUS?

The ABS considers, for statistical purposes, an Indigenous person to be anyone who identifies themselves, or is identified by another household member, as being a person of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander origin. Outside of the ABS in broader Australian society, an individual who is recognised by their community as a person of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander origin may also be considered to be Indigenous.

At 30 June 2006, the estimated Indigenous population was 517,200, an overall proportion of 2.5% of the Australian population. An estimated 53,000 people or 10% of the Indigenous population were of Torres Strait Islander origin.
