Contents and Explanatory Information
SPREADSHEET CONTENTS
The attached spreadsheets include various cross-tabulations of the characteristics of wage and salary earners such as age, sex, occupation, wage and salary income and total income. Most of the data in these tables are presented for each Statistical Local Area (SLA) in Australia.
These data have been compiled from the Australian Taxation Office's (ATO) Individual Income Tax Return Database and are part of the Australian Bureau of Statistics' (ABS) program to increase the range of regional statistics available, particularly through the use of administrative information from other government agencies. The ABS wishes to acknowledge the support the Australian Taxation Office has provided in compiling these statistics.
All individual income tax statistics provided to the ABS by the ATO have been in aggregated form only, at the SLA level. No information about individual taxpayers has been released to the ABS.

Please Note:
(a) The attached spreadsheet files contain data for all SLAs in Australia (Note: Tables 9 and 14 are by SSD only). Users wishing to obtain a table(s) for a particular State or Territory should contact their local ABS office.
(b) Tables for 1995-96, 1996-97 and 1997-98 are also available for SLA boundaries based on ASGC98. Users wishing to obtain copies of these should contact their local ABS office.
(c) Revisions have been made to Table 1 for the years 1995-96 to 1998-99. See paragraph 13 of the Explanatory Notes
(d) For 2001-02 data, there has been a change in the timing of provision of data from the ATO. Prior to 2001-02, data was being provided after an 18 month processing cycle (i.e. 18 months after the relevant financial year). Data for 2001-02 has been provided after a 16 month processing cycle and future data will also be provided on this basis. This means that it is likely that fewer tax returns will have been processed in comparison to data from the previous years. It is estimated that the earlier cut-off point for the processing cylce will capture around 95-98% of the relevant tax returns. Therefore estimates of the number of tax payers and the total wage and salary income produced from the 16 month processing cycle are likely to be slightly lower that those produced from the 18 month processing cycle, but the calculated averages should still be comparable. The 2001-02 data are shown on ASGC2002 boundaries.
(e) In 2002 several areas in Queensland underwent significant boundary changes resulting in the creation of a number of new Aboriginal and Island Councils. There were 14 new Aboriginal Councils (ACs) created and 17 new Torres Strait Island Councils (ICs). They are mainly in Far North and North West Queensland. These changes have occurred in the Local Government Area (LGA) and Statistical Local Area (SLA) structure. The ABS has not been able to produce reliable wage and salary earner estimates for the areas involved in the change (including the residual entities from which these ACs and ICs were excised). Consequently, the data for these areas have been marked n.a. in the attached data cubes. Data at Statistical Subdivision (SSD) and Statistical Division (SD) level remain largely unaffected. The attached data cubes include codes that enable SLA data to be aggregated to larger geographic areas such as SSDs and SDs, however, as the SLA data for the newly created Aboriginal and Island Council Areas are not available it will not be possible to aggregate the data to these levels. Users wishing to obtain SSD or SD data which includes data for the Aboriginal and Island Council Areas should contact their local ABS office. Further details regarding the creation of the Aboriginal and Island Council Areas in 2002 can be referenced in Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC), 2002 (cat. no. 1216.0).
