JULY KEY POINTS


ORIGINAL ESTIMATES
  • In original terms, the July 2011 merchandise imports were $19,708m, an increase of $1,310m (7%) on the June 2011 merchandise imports of $18,398m.


PRELIMINARY BALANCE OF PAYMENTS GOODS IMPORTS
  • Preliminary analysis shows that goods debits (imports) on a balance of payments basis in original terms rose $120m (1%) between June and July 2011. In seasonally adjusted terms goods debits fell $28m from $19,409m in June 2011 to $19,381m in July 2011. Intermediate and other merchandise goods fell $513m (6%), driven by the fuels and lubricants component which was down $455m (13%) following a rise of $333m (11%) between May and June 2011. Consumption goods rose $166m (3%), capital goods rose $165m (4%) and non-monetary gold rose $153m (39%).
  • The June quarter 2011 issue of Balance of Payments and International Investment Position, Australia (cat. no. 5302.0) and the July 2011 issue of International Trade in Goods and Services, Australia (cat. no. 5368.0) will include goods debits estimates that have been revised since the June 2011 issue of International Trade in Goods and Services, Australia which was released on 3 August 2011. These revisions reflect information recently obtained.
  • Preliminary analysis shows that, in seasonally adjusted terms, the goods imports volumes was revised from 3.3% to 3.6% and the implicit price deflator was revised from 0.6% to 0.5% during the June quarter 2011.


REVISIONS
  • Revisions have been made to the previous six months to incorporate the latest administrative data relating to international merchandise trade.
