JANUARY KEY POINTS


BALANCE ON GOODS AND SERVICES
  • The trend estimate of the balance on goods and services was a deficit of $1,708m in January 2010, a decrease of $1m on the revised deficit in December 2009.
  • In seasonally adjusted terms, the balance on goods and services was a deficit of $1,176m in January 2010, a decrease of $998m on the revised deficit in December 2009.


CREDITS (EXPORTS OF GOODS & SERVICES)
  • Seasonally adjusted, goods and services credits rose $278m (1%) to $20,146m. Non-monetary gold rose $167m (15%) and non-rural goods rose $130m (1%). Rural goods fell $36m (2%). Services credits rose $13m.


DEBITS (IMPORTS OF GOODS & SERVICES)
  • Seasonally adjusted, goods and services debits fell $719m (3%) to $21,323m. Intermediate and other merchandise goods fell $517m (7%) with the fuels and lubricants component down $666m (25%), non-monetary gold fell $314m (47%) and capital goods fell $31m (1%). Consumption goods rose $122m (2%) and services debits rose $20m.

REVISIONS

Revisions have been made to incorporate the latest available data relating to merchandise trade. There were no revisions to the balance of payments series in original terms.


RELATED PUBLICATION

The publication Characteristics of Australian Exporters, 2008-09 (cat. no. 5368.0.55.006) will be released on 26 March 2010. This publication will analyse the number and characteristics of Australia's exporters. Estimates of exporters of merchandise trade are compiled from data sourced from the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service and from the Australian Taxation Office's Australian Business Register. Estimates on exporters of services are compiled largely from the ABS Survey of International Trade in Services.


CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

CHANGES TO STATISTICS PRESENTED ON AN ANZSIC BASIS

From this issue, there will be changes to the availability of merchandise trade industry statistics.

The changes will affect merchandise trade data available by subscription or on an ad hoc basis:
  • all data for June 2005 and earlier is available only in accordance with Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification 1993 (ANZSIC93)
  • data from July 2005 to June 2009 is available in accordance with both ANZSIC93 and Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification 2006 (ANZSIC06)
  • data from July 2009 is available only on an ANZSIC06 basis.
  • data from July 2009 to December 2009 previously released on an ANZSIC93 basis is no longer available.

For further details about the introduction of ANZSIC06 and information on concordances, refer to the Information paper: Changes to International Trade in Goods Industry Statistics, July 2009 (cat. no. 5368.0.55.011).

These changes will not change the statistics presented on a Balance of Payments basis nor result in revisions to the total value of goods and services credits and debits.
