This data cube updates experimental estimates released on 19 November 2008, Experimental Estimates of Industry Multifactor Productivity, 2007-08 (cat. no. 5260.0.55.002), and estimates originally presented in Information Paper: Experimental Estimates of Industry Multifactor Productivity, 2007 (cat. no. 5260.0.55.001).

This data cube provides experimental industry estimates of Multifactor productivity (MFP), and two aggregate MFP measures: aggregate MFP for the updated definition of the market sector, consisting of 16 industries (ANZSIC06 Divisions A to N and Divisions R and S); and MFP for the 12 selected industries (ANZSIC06 Divisions A to K and R).

The estimates of MFP for the 12 individual industries in this data cube use the same basic data that underlies the estimates for selected industries in electronic Table 13 published in the 2008-09 System of National Accounts (cat. no. 5204.0).

The ABS is currently working on individual estimates for each of the additional new industries (ANZSIC06 Divisions L,M,N and S) that have been included in the expanded definition of the market sector. These estimates are expected to be completed in 2010 for inclusion in the next data cube update.

Changes in this data cube

This is the first release of the aggregate MFP series for the grouping of 16 industries for the expanded market sector based on the new international standards, System of National Accounts 2008 (SNA08) and the new industry classifications set out in Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification, 2006 (ANZSIC06). For more information on these changes, see Information paper: Implementation of new international statistical standards in ABS National and International Accounts, September 2009, (cat. no. 5310.0.55.002).

Estimates of MFP in the December 2009 issue of ASNA were based on the group of 12 ANZSIC06 industries (divisions A to K and R) which is the grouping nearest to the market sector as defined in ANZSIC93 (divisions A to K and P). For ease of comparison, aggregate MFP estimates for the 12 selected industries based on the previous approach have been updated and included in this data cube. This data cube provides experimental industry estimates of MFP for each of these 12 industries. Revisions to MFP estimates reflect revisions to the national accounts time-series. However, due to the SNA08 and ANZSIC06 changes, the data are not directly comparable to previous data cube releases.

This data cube contains additional tables. Table 2 shows the aggregate indicators and growth accounting analysis for 12 selected industries as published in ASNA 2008-09. Table 3 presents the same indicators for productivity growth cycles, which was excluded temporarily from ASNA 2008-09, due to a short time span of data at that time. The first two productivity growth cycles, 1964-65 to 1968-69, and 1968-69 to 1973-74 are no longer available because value added indicators on the new basis are no longer available. The timing of the peaks for the remaining growth cycles, commencing 1973-74 (in Table 3) have not changed since the previous release, except for a new peak identified for 2007-08.

Tables 13 to 17 have also been added, updating gross output measures of multifactor productivity. These tables were previously published in the data cube 5260.0.55.001 Information paper: Experimental Estimates of Industry Multifactor Productivity. Gross output based measures are available
for balanced supply-use years, up to 2007-08, one year earlier than the latest year.
